Description
“With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.”
~ Mark 15: 37-38
Two sheets of acrylic-glass lay divided by a mysterious dark panel. The composition of the glass refers to the temple curtain, torn in two. Their surfaces have been scratched with sandpaper creating rhythmic shadows cast below on a white backdrop. The linear element suggests wind patterns, and the subtle texture underneath symbolizes lung capillaries. Both ‘wind’ and ‘breath’ have been linked with the movement Holy Spirit by which we are transformed and renewed.
The central panel signifies both the death and life. Layered with graphite, the panel possesses a somber tone yet it also emits a luminous aura. The reflective quality brings to mind the same quality shared with the Vietnam Memorial, inviting the viewer into a realm of meditative remembrance. On the other hand, the panel represents the silver band given in marriage. Jesus proposed to die for his beloved so that we may be bound together in intimate love.
Through Christ’s sacrifice our identity is restored and fulfilled. It is by his Spirit, his final breath that we live.
