Description A tribute to two of my many favorite cartoon characters "Gir & Pucca." Made out of charcoal, an instrument I hated from the start...but now like ^^
Hope you like it.

Hey hey!
I was just searching for some charcoal pieces to get inspired by (since I wanted to try charcoal on this one pic I'm working on), and I noticed this one!
Any advice for a noob like me?? XD

Hey glad you like it! XD
For advice, how specific do you mean?

Just any general tips you have...like don't spill water on it or something XD

Hmm, I generally didn't use water for charcoal work if that's what you mean.
But if you mean spilling actual water like, "NOOO! I messed up the whole picture!!" Then yes, avoid water contact.

But I will say that don't make everything so dark with the pressure of the charcoal, but do what comes natural to you.
But if you want to play it safe, try light line work with pencils before scraping the page with the charcoal.
That way if you need fixing with lines, it won't leave a huge smudge when you erase it.
Believe me, it works: [link]

Thanks

I just tried starting out with them for this pic I'm working on, and I have to say, they're much messier than I was expecting! I'm also having a rough time blending things smoothly. I tried a blending stump but that wasn't doing much (although it's an old and cheap one so I guess that makes sense), and then I resorted to my finger which worked for a bigger spot but that's it. Any suggestions?

Wrapping a tissue around your finger helps with blending (or shading if that what you mean)
Start dark then light, like the greyscale chart.

I typically go from light to dark, but that's just me XD
And the problem is my finger is too big for a lot of the spaces in my sketch D: WHY DO I INSIST ON MAKING THINGS HARD FOR MYSELF?!

Well I don't know what to say there ^^'
Just try and make it work for you, or at least learn not to touch the page with your finger.

UGH why is life so hard?!

SirBaconing100 In reply to Nikrain [2013-03-11 01:13:06 +0000 UTC]

Because it's "life" dude!
It can be easy, it can be hard, but it's life ^^
But is your finger that problematic?

Nikrain In reply to SirBaconing100 [2013-03-11 01:43:49 +0000 UTC]

It's just too big.
Like Seriously some of the spots I'm trying to shade are like, half a centimeter. My finger is way bigger than that.

Maybe you don't have to shade every part of the picture.

Well they do have charcoal pencils and other things for smudging at an art store.

Yeah...but that requires money XD
And I'm already past one of the tougher stages of the project I'm working on at the moment, so we'll see what happens.

Cool, but I thought you were done with Deviantart.
Oh!
I must ask you a question!
I've been making a new comic series & I've been going through a barrels of thinking and changing.
In a comic, do you prefer funny skits or action-drama (with a smidge of comedy)??
Cause I really need help making a choice and what I can I do to improve with my work.

What? Haha no I'm done with Youtube.
What made you think I was done with dA?
Personally, I prefer action-drama, but that's just my own opinion. Whichever floats your boat, man.

Oh ok, I thought from your journal you were going away from both ^^'
Anyway, I just need direction 'tis all. On how my work should really be.

No no XD I'm staying here.

Well, that is all up to you. What kind of work do you want to make? Because if you'd rather make funny comics, you go with that. Serious drama? Go with drama. Whatever you find more enjoyment doing is where you should take your work.

Oh ok, So glad! ^^

True, but sometimes I must hear what ppl like. You know feedback.
I've been making a new series from my Adobie book, remember that one?
One of my characters from the roster is the main character.
I could show you issue one, but by Email is the best way.

That's very true And I remember Adobie! I really liked that one I'd happily read the first issue and maybe give you critique if you're up for it. Note me your email and I'll give you mine so we can do that.
