Description The American Bison is the largest land mammal native to North America, they can reach 6.5 ft (1.9 m) high at the hump, 12.5 ft (3.8 m) in length, and weigh up to 2,200 lbs (997.9 kg). Despite their massive size they can jump 6 ft (1.8 m) in the air and run up to 35 miles per hour (56.3 kph). For thousands of years, the bison has been an integral part of the cultures of numerous indiginous societies and was nearly driven to extinction by European Americans during the 1800s, reducing an estimated population of tens of millions to less than a thousand in only a few decades. Focused conservation efforts around the turn of the century has allowed the bison to rebound in numbers and numerous herds can now be found in national and state parks, wildlife refuges, and Indian reservations. Ever an iconic image of the American West, the American Bison has been the national mammal of the United States since 2016.

I was inspired to make this after viewing the recent Ken Burns documentary The American Buffalo.
