Where are you?

During the day I pretend that
            When I turn to share a joke or whisper
            It is not you I seek
And I did not forget your loss
            Momentarily

Nights I dream of you,
           Of purity
                       Shimmering
on gossamer
Wings
            Snuffed out

And while I am no stranger to nightmares
            I awaken close to
Tears
            That will not fall

Sometimes I see you
            The curve of your cheek
A twist of your lips
             The ripple of your hair on the breeze

Sometimes I hear you
            Your laughter in a crowded hall
            Your whisper in the dark

Sometimes I put myself through torture
             Buying trinkets that remind me of
you
So that I fall into memory when I
             Stumble across the pieces
                        Drifting through my
life
in your wake

Sometimes it scares me
The days I don't hear you
                        Or see you
                                    Or smell you on the wind

It's all fading
Like mist in the wind
You're fading
