Description My "fanartize ancient and forgotten videogames"-project continues. Does anyone remember Master of Orion?

In the distant future humanity reached the stars and we soon firstcontacted the aliens. There were an ant species, a bird species, a bear species, a cat species, a cyborg species, a fish species, a lizard species, a rock species... Charming bunch. There also were a race of blue-skinned space elf amazons, the Elerians, who instantly came and conquered us! Some of our enslaved intellectuals speculate that our harsh overladies have strong psionic skills, very useful in disarming the enemy without firing a shot, and that they simply mind-controlled us into submission. The others point out that it was our own strategic blunder that brought us down. Our valiant defenders certainly were valiant... but they also were young males, 20-something bachelors.

Tools: Mouse, Paint Shop Pro 7

PS. That's right. The Mrrshans weren't huge. It was all propaganda! So how did a housecat-sized cat race have so much strength and warrior spirit? They relied on the cuteness factor. "Awww", said their enemy. A fatal mistake.

PPS. Today the Mrrshan race is domesticated by the Elerian Empire. The Mrrshan ambassador refuses to acknowledge the word "domesticated". They were conquered, dammit, CONQUERED!!

I love the copper and green armor effects here. I use very fine wash strokes on my armored minis to create a similar effect. It takes a steady hand, a very fine brush, and the patience of a Saint until you get more practiced at doing this effect, but it does make the armor stand out from the crowd It's similar to the Non Metallic Metal effect you get, and takes time and plenty of practice to get it right, but seeing images like this inspires me constantly to keep evolving my miniature painting techniques.

Always wondered if they lifted these from Star Control or if both lifted from the same source.

I don't know much about scifi history, but I can say this: "blue skinned space elf girl" isn't a video game era invention. It just can't be.

Sure, but what about blue "blue skinned, kinda ruthless telepathic space elves living in gender separated societies with the men staying at the home world, and the woman flying to battle". It's a bit more specific and a bit more of an odd resemblance.
Well, not really odd, since Master of Orion took many ideas from different science fiction franchises, it would neither be odd if they also took inspiration from Star Control nor would it be odd if they both took inspiration from somewhere else.
I'd just like to know if they did, since Master of Orion tended to lift from the best, so the original story may be great (well Star Control 2 was great so that's still an option).

m002 still (sadly) one of better 4x games and the new iteration went with godawful moo3 way of rts combat and less ship designing

Moo3 was a huge disappointment, I remember that well.

I liked the spooky music, though.

But not as much as I liked Moo2's music.

Ooooh... I used to play the Elerians to death! But when controlled by the computer, it was always races with a production advantage that tended to dominate.

DustAngel [2015-04-27 17:19:27 +0000 UTC]

My Elerians always used to wipe out the Mrrshan or be crushed by them, because the friend I played with and me always joked about how we'd enslave and/or kill them to make pretty fur coats out of them, because they looked so fluffy, so we always ended up declaring war on them, to conquer at least one planet.
Aah... the amount of fun one could have in that game just by kidding around. It's one of those things that can enrich a mediocre game, let alone a great one like MoO2.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

DustAngel In reply to DustAngel [2015-05-05 21:35:03 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, those reptilian rascals! They are such kidders.

War!
You conquer a colony or two
Peace?
Well, alright...
Ten Turns Later: War!
*sigh*

I love that game, with all it's AI's weirdness ^^

But I still haven't touched the third one. I've yet hear anyone to refer to it positively, so I just stayed away from it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UmbraVesica In reply to DustAngel [2015-06-12 16:08:56 +0000 UTC]

Actually the 3rd one was a good... empire simulator. I found it enjoyable because of the layers of strategy and depth involved. Fan patches made wonders compared to the buggy mess it was during release. It plays more like a cross between a MOO game and a Total War game without the kick-ass controllable battles.

On another note...

Sakkra in MOO2 are like the Silicoid in MOO1: They have research penalties but they are EVERYWHERE and they HATE YOUR GUTS.

SirTiefling In reply to DustAngel [2015-04-27 19:22:51 +0000 UTC]

I always had trouble with the infamous reptilian race, Sakkra. First contact -> war. But oddly, when I tested the disastrous part III, they seemed to love my humans... A creepy game.
