Interesting. So if I dream I'm an animal, that's my subconscious showing me my instincts, without my inhibitions getting in the way? Well, I don't think I've ever dreamed I was an animal...
And I'm curious about the "external influence" too. I'm guessing that's when you get some idiot shouting at you while you sleep & screwing with your sleeping mind?

I think dreaming being an animal is the strongest identity dreams involving animal vitality, but when certain animals appear in your dream, or you fight against them, or run away from them, there's also a subconscious message of some sort regarding your inhibited instincts.
And well, the external influence has to be much more stronger than a guy shouting at you during sleep, remember we are talking about changing (in this dream's case) identity, which is REALLY hard to occur during deep sleep.
In Lucas' case, Tesberot is able to destroy his animal form, in order to make him weaker and capture him.

Yeah, I guess having some else muscle their way into your dream & attack you would be a pretty strong external influence. Not the nicest thing to happen...
