Description
Roger Chaumet was raised in a gilded cage. The son of high-powered executive and former Contract Rider Marianne Chaumet , Roger's childhood was luxurious but hollow; his mother was barely present, leaving him to be raised by a nanny, and he had few if any friends. From a young age he was tutored in ballet, savate, fencing and marksmanship — skills that made his eventual decision to become a Contract Rider like his mother seem a natural choice.
Conveniently, around the same time as Roger was looking to become a Rider, the Soleil d'Or luxury goods corporation — for which Marianne served as head of human resources — announced its intention to hire and invest in a Contract Rider to act as a spokesman. Roger joined the company as their in-house Rider, using the Raiment Driver developed by their technology division; his effortless charisma and eye for detail made him a natural PR specialist and social media influencer, and he took well to the life of a socialite. Still, he struggled with feelings of depression and isolation, and turned to drugs and one night stands in a desperate bid to stave them off. Perhaps his only real friend was Philomena "Mena" Attar, a manager in Soleil d'Or's technology division, who often found herself cleaning up after Roger's misadventures at Marianne's behest.
Despite this, Roger — as "Contract Rider Luxe" — distinguished himself as a skilled fighter and showman, driven in no small part by a desire for approval and attention from his mother. This started to change when he fought the vigilante terrorist Ringo , in the midst of an attempt to bring down the Aegis Dome protecting Elysium; while Luxe managed to wound and disable the Lone Rider, Ringo shot Luxe with a transformation bullet that paralysed him, and desperate tried to convince the younger Rider that Marianne was just using him for her own ends. Marianne, who had intervened in her old Rider form to "make sure things went smoothly", responded by executing Ringo on the spot.
Given the credit for Ringo's defeat, Roger was selected by the Elysium City Council to become a new Common Rider, using the newly-developed "San-Gata System "... and when his "coronation" was attacked by Contract Riders Java, Wyvern and Dolmen , Marianne insisted that he complete the ceremony and don his new belt: "this is what you were born to do". Hearing her words, Roger felt the sting of Ringo's venom in his brain as he came to realise the truth: Marianne had never cared about him, and only saw him as a tool. Hurt and angry, Roger turned on his mother and her Golgom conspiracy, allying himself with the other Contract Riders.
At first, the other Riders struggled to like or trust Roger (save for Mari, who had worked with him in the past); Parker and Hannah were particularly distrustful, aware of his role in Ringo's death. Over time, he proved himself to be compassionate, loyal and brave, always willing to throw himself into harm's way for his new friends; in particular, he formed an odd friendship with Sean, and found a burgeoning romance with Dio Kotsonaros, the boisterous Contract Rider Heracles .
Sadly, the effects of a toxic upbringing are hard to shake off. As he investigated the Golgom cult, Roger discovered that Marianne had intended for him to take on the role of Bu-Sodagi-Jo, the Century King Black Sun — a puppet king that she could use to rule over humanity in the "Shin Anthropocene" that Golgom wished to bring about. Rejecting this fate, he fought back against Golgom — but his pain and resentment drove him to a level of violence that only seemed to embody the role he wished to escape.
The Système de Luxe is a high-end Mahourider system designed by Soleil d'Or's technicians, built around a large diamond K-stone at the core of the Raiment Driver. Its échange de matériel function allows Luxe to change forms by switching out the jewelry box-based Bijoux Buckle on the front of the belt, altering the metal armor of Luxe's suit to grant different abilities. In battle, he wields the Épee de Luxe, a rapier that can be converted into a pistol for long-ranged attacks, and rides the Machine Opulente, a sleek and high-tech motorcycle. By refracting the light of his K-stone through his suit, Luxe can perform the Gemme Eblouissante (or Gem Flash) to stun and disorient his foes — making them perfect targets for his finishing move, a savate-style roundhouse kick called the Coup du Cavalier.
His forms are:
- Luxe Cuivre — Luxe's copper-based primary form, themed after a fleur de lis. An agile combatant, Roger uses his training to stay out of reach and avoid enemy attacks while striking at his foes.
Richesse! Charisme! Gloire! Luxe Cuivre! - Luxe d'Argent — A lightweight silver form themed after the Gallic rooster, which strips down Luxe's armor in order to make him blindingly fast, able to rapid-fire shots from the Épee de Luxe. When using this form, Roger tends to keep his distance from enemies, as his reduced armor makes him highly vulnerable.
Vitesse! Dextérité! Précision! Luxe d’Argent!
- Luxe Titane — A heavily armored titanium form themed after a wild boar, which does its best to make Roger's slender frame seem imposing. In this form Roger can make use of the Marteau de Luxe, a large sledgehammer that strikes with explosive force; in practice, however, he tends to use it more for grappling and punching.
Puissance! Force! Muscle! Luxe Titane! - Luxe Soleil d'Or — Presented to Roger by the Common Rider following the death of Lone Rider Ringo, the Soleil d'Or Buckle was created from the super-form trinket of Contract Rider Fleur, Marianne Chaumet. This golden, rose-themed form grants Luxe a considerable boost in strength, speed and defense, able to go up against almost any Geister with ease. It is also armed with the Soleil Sceptre, a multi-purpose cane that can be extended into a whip and can channel bursts of light from the Raiment Driver.
Vive le Soleil! Sunlight fills our golden kingdom! Soleil d'Or! - Luxe Miserables — Created from Roger's feelings of hurt and betrayal that caused him to turn against his mother, which induced a transformation in the Bijoux Buckle, inverting it and causing Luxe Soleil d’Or's golden armor to Cast Off. Clad in tarnished copper, Luxe Miserables channels Roger’s anger into strength through the Guillotine Cleaver, an enormous, segmented whip-sword resembling a scorpion’s tail.
Cast off! The people have spoken! The revolution will not be civilized! Luxe Miserables! - Black DX (Black Deluxe) — Born in the same Citogenesis Event that created Trinity Wyvern , Roger's hatred of Golgom and desire to turn their mythology against them transformed him into a burning warrior in jet-black armour, his form echoing the legend of Bu-Sodagi-Jo. Incredible power radiates out of his body at every moment; Luxe's disorienting Gem Flash inherits the sun's fury to become the deadly Kingstone Nova, and by miming ritual suicide he can ignite his weapon — the two-bladed Rakucane sword — with corrosive black fire, the Sanguis Regem, that destroys all it touches.
Wake up the burning hero! King of the Sun, Black Deluxe!
Though Roger desired revenge on his mother and Golgom, he never got the chance to take it, as Trinity Wyvern killed Marianne after a brutal fight. In the wake of this, Roger felt hollow and lost — his entire life had been defined by his relationship to his mother, and now he didn't have that. It was only once Senan Lexley revealed his intentions to use the power of Ultraman Caesar to forcibly separate every human being into their own isolated "bubble" that Roger realised what he wanted: to be there for his friends as himself, coming together with others because they were stronger together, and seizing the future unburdened by the past. With this intent in mind, Roger was able to access a new form, fighting back against Senan to protect the happiness he'd found with the other Riders.
- Luxe Platin — Embodying Roger's liberation from negative influence and outside expectations, Luxe Platin is a gleaming swordsman clad in platinum and ermine motifs, armed with an array of tricks to support his friends in combat. Platin is able to conjure Luminous Ribbons of hard light to wield in battle, restraining foes and delivering enormous punches and kicks made up of ribbons weaved together — something that, in the form's debut, Roger used to uppercut Senan out of the dome entirely. His Diamond Photon ability enhances the Gem Flash into a blinding beam of light, and he wields Plativoulch, a shining sword capable of separating into a bladed whip.
Frankiz! Kevatalder! Breudeuriezh! Over the Revolution! Luxe Platin!
So, first things first: Roger's name is pronounced in the French manner, Roh-JAIR SHAU-may. (Despite Roger and Marianne's French themeing, the Chaumets are canonically ancestrally from Quebec, much as they like to pretend otherwise.) I really love how strong his design themeing is, and how much thought went into him. SonataWaves , who designed and played as Luxe, really made him compelling and sympathetic despite his initially antagonistic position.
I should probably note that all of his weapons are basically just Bloodborne weapons. The Épee de Luxe is the Reiterpallasch, the Marteau de Luxe is the Boom Hammer, the Soleil Sceptre is the Threaded Cane, the Guillotine Cleaver is the Beast Cleaver, and the Rakucane is (of course) the Rakuyo by way of Black RX's Revolcane. (The one exception is Plativoulch, which is based on Ivy Valentine's Snake Sword.) This is good, because what are Bloodborne weapons if not edgy transforming Rider weapons?
Luxe's base forms were designed by SonataWaves , with me doing some slight redesigns to Argent and Titane. Luxe Soleil d'Or and Luxe Miserables were designed by Speed_Freak01 .
