Description Glass Beach, Fort Bragg, California

This beach is the former dump site for Fort Bragg. They cleaned it up a bit, and mother nature did the rest.

So beautiful. I read that it's no longer like this, that tourists ruined it.
I feel bad because I had planned to be a tourist and pick up glass. I didn't get the chance to. But it is cleaning the beach so is it really that bad?

This shot was 4 years ago. I went back about 2 years ago and it was quite dull there. People were taking the glass by the buckets-full. I can understand if people wanted to help clean the beach by removing metals and other waste, but the glass has little or no environmental impact. Instead of leaving this as a historical site for all to love and appreciate, we are ruining it.

I too wanted to be one of the ones picking up glass, but I decided a picture was better. Than I could share with everyone.

i would have named the beach either shimmer shore or glimmer beach.

i thought people weren't aloud to take the things from this beach to preserve the beauty

Beautiful picture of how the wonderful glass beach used to look before tourists picked through everything

That's pretty! Been there, too, on my road trip and I miss the West Coast a lot right now. Sigh.

I've always wanted to, but I had to resist.

Unfortunately, the last time I was there, it didn't look nearly this beautiful.

I love this picture, but I hate that most of the glass is gone now

I went back last year to see about getting a new shot of the beach, and I couldn't reproduce anything like this. It's sad that people are taking the glass and future generations won't be able to enjoy the beach.

Sadly, a lot of the people who take the glass know they are not supposed to, but they also know they aren't likely to get caught.

Yah, but you don't want anyone to just through glass into the ocean to make more. It was just a once in a life time thing that happened there. I do pick up a few pieces every now and then, but not a lot. Thanks for the conversation

Omg Heaven! LoL Are you allowed to take the glass home or do they want to keep it that way?

SJG-photography In reply to Fyrefly86 [2009-11-24 05:19:09 +0000 UTC]

You aren't supposed to take the glass, but people do take it away in bucket loads. There are park rangers that patrol the beach, but they also drive to other beaches.

Sadly, the beach doesn't look the same way it did in that shot, in my opinion.

Ya I would be conflicted between taking some home to work with for crafts and jewelry and wanting to keep the beach the way it is lol...it would be quite the dilemma for me Maybe I'll just avoid temptation and not go there lol

Interesting thing is, that people can make "art" even of something they should be ashamed of.

wow...are those bottles or like melted glass rocks?
Looks amazing but im sure you don't want to walk thru there with bare feet.

That's actually old broken glass from long ago. The ocean has smoothed it, so it's safe to walk over in your bare feet.

It is a very beautiful place. It's fun to sit in the sand and glass and sift through it. For a moment, I imagine myself in the past when I do.

SJG-photography In reply to fosho4 [2008-05-04 06:12:27 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it is. Glass beach is the remains of what use to be Fort Bragg's city dump. After they cleaned it up a bit, the glass is what remains.
