9/13/21 UPDATE: Updated design, new typing, and new name!

This was a bit of an out-of-nowhere decision considering that I was already happy with "Anowana"'s updated design, but it's probably something that was necessary regardless. A commenter on another one of my updates told me a few days back that I was lacking in Electric-types in Sundo - only five until now, along with an Ultra Beast, a Legendary, and a regional variant. Looking at my existing roster for potential candidates, I noticed that "Anowana", previously Dragon/Steel, was looking a little plain for such a rare and valuable Pokémon. The Steel typing was literally only because of the fact that the species it's based on is sometimes called the "golden arowana", and while that's fine and all, I could've done more with the various inspirations. None of the other fakemon I designed seemed suited for a typing change, so I had to look up potential justifications for making this thing Dragon/Electric instead. Luckily, there is one and a pretty solid one at that: the Shachihoko statue motif, which this design was partly based on, is mounted on temple roofs to protect against fire damage, as it was believed that it could summon rain which would certainly come in handy for putting any fires out. I decided to put a modern spin on this and combine that idea with a lightning rod, which does much the same thing because most building fires in the old days were caused by lightning. Besides, summoning rain means control over the weather and thus storms, which Asian dragons are famous for anyway. The rest was easy - literally all I had to do was change the fins into lightning-like shapes with a spiffy glow effect, making sure to add some pointed tips to them for conducting electricity. Accordingly, I also changed the movepool, yoinking all three of the Electric moves from Dracozolt's level-up movepool and substituting some of the existing moves with them, and replacing Hydro Pump with Thunder (from Zekrom[!]) and Autotomize with Eerie Impulse (from Lanturn). Lastly, while I liked the previous name a lot, it was literally only one letter different from "Arowana" and could've caused confusion over its origins, so I changed that, too. All in all, this was a change that in hindsight was necessary, and I'm definitely happy with this new and very literal glow-up for this beautiful giant!

Of course, I had to change the Gigantamax form as well, but that was pretty simple after updating the normal form. The same changes I made also applied in that case, so I doubt there's any need for me to go over them again. At least the energy sphere I couldn't explain previously makes much more sense now!

11/29/20 UPDATE: New design!

The old version of this 'mon looked simultaneously too plain and too gaudy, so I updated it to look more streamlined. Color patterns instead of complex scales, simpler barbels and fins, shorter horns integrated into brow ridges, a longer more sinuous body to play into the Chinese dragon angle, and a new name as well to better suit the typing. I stirred in some flavor by adding traits of the shachihoko or Tiger Carp as well, so he now looks more exotic and fearsome! Not much else to say about this guy, but I do have a Gigantamax form planned for him as well, so stay tuned for that when I get around to finishing the Sundo G-Maxes in general.

This is another single-stage idea I had in mind for a while now, and one of those that looked quite bland in the lineart but started to really come into its own when I colored it. I needed something super-rare, valuable, and powerful, and I needed representatives of all the signature animals of Indonesia - the three national animals are the Komodo dragon, the Javan hawk-eagle, and the Asian arowana. I've already covered the first two , but I was a bit confused about how to handle the third one initially. I was planning for it to be a two-stage Water/Light type because the other two are two-stagers, but the typing ended up being given to Lamphrion and Incandagon, and I've gotta be honest, I think I have a bit too many fish-like creatures that are two-stagers. Plus I didn't know if there was anything I could use as a pre-evolution, so I decided to scrap it and make the arowana a single-stager.

Originally Parawana was just going to be based on a mixture of the golden color morph of the Asian arowana and a Chinese dragon - the Asian arowana is sometimes called the "dragonfish" due to its resemblance to the mythical creature - but when I colored it entirely gold, I felt it looked a little dull (ironic, ain't it? XD). Later on, I colored the scales all rainbow-like, and then it occurred to me that I'd inadvertently homaged another mythical beast, the Rainbow-fish of Hindu mythology. According to legend, it had four colors to its scales representing each element - green for earth, blue for water, yellow for air, and red for fire - and ate Buddha himself before being caught by a fisherman who freed the famous figure. Because it was as big as a whale, its meat fed an entire nation for a year! Such size, power, and association with the elements led me to assign the Dragon-type to it alongside the arowana's "dragonfish" nickname, while the Steel-type was added because of the "gold" and "silver" color morphs which were the basis for the normal and shiny colors, respectively.

Stats- and move-wise, I wanted a true monster in terms of defenses, with passable attack but poor speed thanks to its immense size. Since he plays a role comparable to Steelix, the Iron Snake Pokémon's stats were of course the starting point, with a spread of 75/85/200/55/65/30. I decided to trim down the 200 Defense to 150, but made the Sp. Def. the same number so Parawana can serve as a formidable wall on both physical AND special fronts! I then equalized the offensive stats to 70 (the average of 85 and 55), and cut down the HP from 75 to 60 to keep the BST from being unreasonable. Said BST, 530, is 20 points higher than Steelix's 510, befitting something so rare and valuable. Move-wise, I also cobbled together a few moves from Steelix and those of several other Dragon-types. Starting moves Tackle and Harden, Autotomize, Gyro Ball, Dragon Breath, Slam, Crunch, Iron Tail, and Double-Edge were provided by Steelix, while Twister, Protect, Light Screen, Dragon Rage, Natural Gift, Safeguard, Dragon Pulse, and Outrage were lent by Drampa, another single-stage (in canon, anyway) Dragon-type with a rare type combo. Finally, Bubble, Hydro Pump, Brine, and Dragon Dance were provided by fellow aquatic Dragon-type, Kingdra.

You might think that Parawana would play as a standard waller, what with all that defensive bulk, but if you want to know what else he can do besides just sitting there and taking it, I've got two words for you: Dragon Dance. While the boost in speed won't matter that much due to how low Parawana's Speed stat is to begin with, the increase in Attack can turn him from a passable attacker into a dangerous one, with a powerful Outrage, Dragon Pulse, Iron Head, Gyro Ball, and Iron Tail as well as coverage moves of a huge variety of types: Water, Ice, Grass, Electric, Ground, Ghost, Fire, and Fighting! That's eight different types to choose from apart from STAB! Thus, giving him Focus Blast, Flamethrower, or Flame Charge alongside his STAB would essentially gift him with perfect neutral coverage, and all that's left is a Dragon Dance boost and he'll be ready to wreak havoc! Aside from this, his incredible defenses also allow him to play a strong support role, too, with Protect, Light Screen, Roar, Substitute, and even a chain-bred Power Swap to both nerf threatening physical attackers and give himself a boost in attack power at the same time. Exotic, beautiful, talented, and formidable... What more could you ask for with regards to such a rare and sought-after Pokémon?
