Description
Mowgli’s rumbling stomach quickly convinced him to answer, “I need to eat. Let’s go to the good food.”
Kaa led the way while Mowgli tried to get used to walking in just the palm leaf secured by a thin vine. It felt very weird, but starving would be worse. Soon they came to a place that was much less swampy, the terrain being similar to what Mowgli was used to. A minute later they were at a banana tree, and Mowgli devoured several bananas. While he was eating, Kaa asked,
“So what are you going to do tomorrow?”
Mowgli hadn’t thought about that, all he wanted was to get away from all the animals who told him he had to leave the jungle for the man-village. “I haven’t thought about it.”
Kaa smiled, “You can stay here for a while. That swamp and a river separate this part of the jungle from where you came from, so no one will bother us. I can show you around, and then I know a lot of games we could play.”
Mowgli’s face lit up as this was suddenly more interesting that what he was used to. “What kind of games?”
Kaa knew how to manipulate Mowgli. “We can talk about that tomorrow. How about something other than bananas? Here’s a mango tree.”
Mowgli followed Kas to the new tree, but still wanted to know. “Come on, you can tell me what your games are like.”
The big snake hesitated, and then answered, “We can do something simple like walk around and see how many new plants you can spot. Then there are games that involve playing rough and require varying levels of toughness, but I don’t think you could handle those.”
“I’m very tough! I can handle any of your games!”
Kaa snickered. “We’ll see about that. Now let’s finish eating and go to sleep. We need to rest after everything that happened today.”
After Mowgli ate a couple mangos, the pair went a short distance to a pear tree. Mowgli couldn’t help but keep checking that his leaf loincloth was still intact as it was difficult for him to tell whether he was wearing anything. But his clothing remained in place and he continued eating a variety of fruit to complete his dinner.
After they finished eating, Kaa asked, “Did you have a place to sleep in mind?”
Mowgli hadn’t. “No, I can just sleep here.” He sat with his back against a large tree and folded his arms.
“It’s better to sleep on a tree branch well off the ground. Insects will bother you all night otherwise.”
“I’ve tried that, but I moved in my sleep and fell off. I’m not doing that again.” Mowgli looked at Kaa and suddenly had an idea. “Can you wrap me up tight so that I don’t fall off?”
Kaa was surprised and pleased that Mowgli came up with the idea before Kaa suggested it. “That should work, let’s give it a try. Stand up so I can wrap around you and carry you up.” When Mowgli hesitated, Kaa added, “if you’re tough enough.”
“Hey!” Mowgli was insulted but stood up with his arms out. Kaa wrapped his tail around Mowgli’s stomach and chest and gave a quick squeeze.
“Urk!” was Mowgli’s reaction.
“You know I have to hold you tight so I don’t drop you. I’m sure you’re tough enough to handle that.”
“Yes, go ahead.”
Kaa raised his head and extended his body to a branch five meters off the ground and set Mowgli on the wide branch before setting him down in a sitting position. Mowgli lay back with his arms at his sides, and Kaa quickly wrapped his body around Mowgli and the branch from his ankles to his shoulders. While it felt good to Kaa, it would have been better if the branch weren’t included in the wrapping, but there would be more opportunities in the coming days. As for now, it was still good to work on increasing Mowgli’s trust in him.
“How’s that?” asked the snake.
Mowgli wriggled a little back and forth, and declared with some alarm, “That’s not good enough. I can move too much. You have to wrap me tighter!”
Kaa was not going to object to that, but interjected, “Okay, but I have to make sure you can breathe.”
“Well, yeah.”
Kaa tightened his grip on Mowgli, leaving the boy immovably pinned to the branch. The python could feel Mowgli’s stomach and chest pressing against Kaa’s skin with every breath the boy took. That felt great to Kaa … but feeling Kaa’s scales against his skin it also felt great to Mowgli.
“Is that good now?”
“I think so, but I wish we could be sure.”
“I have an idea on how to be sure.” Kaa couldn’t resist. While maintaining his tight grip on Mowgli’s body, he maneuvered his head near Mowgli’s feet and started licking his soles.
Mowgli’s feet turned out to be rather ticklish. He burst out laughing in a second and attempted to squirm, but failed, only managing to rotate his feet and head some. This kept up for a minute, with Kaa alternating between Mowgli’s left and right feet, a few seconds at a time. When Kaa stopped, it took Mowgli another minute before he stopped laughing. Kaa then asked,
“So are you wrapped up tight enough?”
“I think so.”
“You think so? Are you sure?”
Mowgli paused a few seconds for thought before making a sly grin and replying, “Pretty sure, but I think you should tickle my feet again to be safe.”
Kaa didn’t need to ask again. Immediately the python swung his head back to Mowgli’s feet and proceeded to lick them again. This time he got his tongue between Mowgli’s toes, and the man-cub’s reaction increased. He was laughing so hard it appeared he was about to pass out after two minutes when Kaa stopped. After settling down, Mowgli gasped, “That’s … tight …enough,” and fell asleep anyway. Kaa twisted his head around to rest of Mowgli’s stomach and dozed off himself, thinking that this was working out far better than he anticipated.
