Description A koi transformation progress design. I'm not satisfied with the scales, I know they are off. But feel free to critique.

I actually think your scales are fine.As tricky as they are in my opinion scales really don't have a particular size or pattern they should be laid out in ..it's your style so go nuts

A trick I've known a lot of tattoo artists use for problems like this is to shape it in a little clay. Make a tiny koi clay figure and draw the lines on it. That way it's easier to see the dimensions and shapes, directions, ect. Other than the scales, I love it. It's a fantastic concept with a fantastic follow through. Good job.

Thanks for the comment. The clay idea is a good idea. I even have a tiny bendy fish keychain thing that I never even thought could be useful till now. Normally scales aren't as difficult for me as they were on this one. I think I may do a quality scan and photoshop them out and try a do over on the scales. Anyway I'm glad you like it anyway!

I'd love to see the remake! Btw, did you actually tattoo that blue flower?

I'll edit the deviation for sure if I can once I fix it up. I like the design too much to give up now! And yes I did it was the first tattoo I ever did on someone and it's a cover up which is why you can see some of the other tat along the edges lol

Did you go through an apprenticeship or study on your own?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Skelos In reply to StevenWorthey [2011-06-03 15:59:51 +0000 UTC]

I had an apprenticeship for a year but kinda got dicked around with it and so I haven't been apprenticing for another a year now, lol. Been working on updating the portfolio and and going to attempt to get back in the saddle again before giving up entirely. It was just very disrupting for me to have it all fall apart last time so I really don't want a repeat of history XD

lol, that's exactly my story as well. Once my custom built Tim Orth Machines come in the mail (just a week now) I'll finally have every piece of equipment I need to start safely, correctly, and sanitary. Everything in my Dev-art is just my tattoo portfolio that I've been building for the last few months. Once I have an similar Tattoo portfolio I'll ask for a seat at a local shop here. If you every have any questions about tattooing that I might be able to answer, lemme know!

Have you done many tattoos and/or have any pics of tattoos you've done so far? Ya I have some sweet and quite expensive if I do say so myself type machines that my old mentor has been trying to buy off me haha I was basically told to go illegally tattoo out of my house and that they'd coach from a distance.. I decided not to scar the shit outta people as a n00b. But thanks, I won't be doing any tats on my own I'm sure but if I need a second opinion or some assistance I'll shoot the q's your way. Good luck in finding an apprenticeship locally once your portfolio is up to your own personal specs. It's lookin' good so far I'm sure you'd have no problem.

Thanks ^.^ I've only done one tattoo so far but it was a year ago and I don't have the picture any more either way, I'll be doing a lot of tattooing soon and I'll post all the pictures. I don't have a mentor anymore but he taught me how to teach myself, a skill he said I'd need more than anything. I'm no where near where I want to be but I do have the direction down and I promise I'll get there one day. Not sure if you've looked into em' yet but there are two FANTASTIC books that propel anyones apprenticeship into orbit. The first is "How to Draw on the Right side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. and the second is "Basic Fundamentals of Modern Tattoo" by C.R. Jordan. I actually had the lucky chance to chat with C.R. Jordan online for a little bit. He's a fantastic artist and author and I'd highly recomend at least takin' a peak at these books. Btw, I'm totally jealous of your Japanese art ability. It's something I still need lots of practice with.

I'll look into the books for sure, thanks. And thanks for noticing, I've been workin' real hard to get a grasp on the Japanese style and am noticing the progress. Hopefully you'll get to do some new ink and take pics to share soon enough then!

im very impressed of this but i do understand why you aint happy with scales... im struggling with them too and i cant find a good way to draw scales when the body curves that much...

I know scales are a funny thing. When I mapped them out they looked fantastic but somehow I screwed it up during the gel pen process XD Damn no erasers!! Thanks though!
