Description [Reposted from my tumblr account: www.sillehfrilleh.tumblr.com ]

Homestuck fangirlishness aside, I decided to take a chance on drawing my third(?) ever Hetalia fan art, with my own depiction of Philippines in the Spanish colonial period.
So I have this headcannon that when Philippines was under Spain, she was forced to learn how to play the piano (obliged would the be more the term actually) and how to sing since a woman was even more graceful or womanly in the eyes of society when she knows an instrument or two and/or knows how to sing. Also, I imagined Spain bringing an adolescent Philippines to tertulias every now and then, just to show off how well she can sing or play the piano. It was very common then, the tertulias I mean.
Shut up, the color scheme sucks eggs, I know. D’: But I was too lazy. hehe.
Also, err… it’s just a temporary depiction of Philippines. I refuse to add more OC!Philippines in the fandoms. xD However, I do like to give out a headcannon or two. xD DERP DERP.

[EDIT: realized that this was my fourth one xDD]

she's so pretty ;w;
but it looks like she's having a hard time playing the piano XDDD

hmmm in my head i think she's more suited for a guitar because of the harana and it's spanish influence (right???) XDD

Haha, thank you!
Well, yeah, as I was drawing her, I imagined her having a hard time since she was just obliged to play it. Either that or she's concentrated on it.

True, but the guitar back in the Spanish era was considered more of a man's instrument. Also, the piano and the violin was the more popular entertainment (along with dancing, gambling and flirting) in tertulias then, and I imagined Spain bringing her to tertulias. Well, that's in my opinion. xD I guess if she ever could play the guitar, either she would have been playing the rondalla then or it would be recently that she would take a liking into guitar. xD

Ohhhh!!! Wow... this is why I love DA <3 I get to learn so much stuff here XDD thanks for the info

I think she's probably concentrated on playing XD
Lol on the entertainment= flirting
He must have been proud
In my opinion he was the physically abusive and overly protective father(based on how we were treated before XDD) but that's my opinion XD

Maybe she recently started to have an interest withe the guitar because it's becoming a new trend (apparently OuO; )

Ahahaha, yeah. Flirting. xD But I think she doesn't do the flirting part... well, maybe she did, but discreetly and not in a polygamous way... As overrated as it sounds, I think that the men then would do the flirting towards her. xD >.> I don't know, that's just me xD

Yeah, I do respect your opinion a hundred percent. Honestly, in my point of view, I don't think he was abusive at all. Overly protective, yes. But I don't think abusive would be the term. I think careless would be more the word for it. xD I just think that he just wasn't very mindful of taking care of her, basing on her economy under Spain then (he was, sad to say and excuse my language, a very shitty economist. xD England actually took care of Philippines' foreign trades while China took care of Philippines' local trades, basing on history xD No offense to eherm... Spanish people. I think they're better off now actually.). Or maybe Spain just wasn't as experienced as he thought he was, since he took care of several other countries as well (Mexico and Cuba), which I think is the reason why he accidentally overlooked all the abuse of the Indios then. There are several reasons behind the abuses actually, now that I recall my history. I could go on but I think this reply would get longer if I did. Maybe the next reply?
Anyway, that's just my opinion, I'm not forcing you to believe it if you don't want to. Hehe.

Haha, yeah! I think that would make sense. Philippines did undergo a Pinoy Rock phase so I think it's a great idea if she did learn the guitar that way.

Thank goodness she looks like a proper lady here! Hehe. It's what I was trying to aim for despite her expression. x'D

And yeah... I guess. In my head, she does. I haven't seen a headcannon of Philippines knowing how to play any instrument yet. So err... yeah?

coolio!! got any tips in drawing hands cause the way that you make them here is so so dynamic!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sketchadoodle09 In reply to FunAsaurusRex [2012-10-25 14:20:41 +0000 UTC]

Well, what I do when I'm having problems with hands is just looking at my own hands. Like, I position them in an angle I would want to draw and then study them for several minutes. It gets tiring, of course, but it's worthwhile since it makes you take note of how the hands work. If ever my hands can't model, I just look at references pictures on Google. Say, I want to see what a hand looks like when it's offering a handshake, I just search "handshake". Also, it takes a lot of practice; when in your down time and you feel the urge to draw, try drawing hands first. You have to be patient every time because it doesn't take a minute to get them. If it helps, it took me years of practice on the hands. But most of all, I think you just have to enjoy drawing them. I like drawing curved things, like backs, fingers, and waists; that's why I enjoy doing hands the most. Try to find something enjoyable in practicing
Hope that helped

Thank you! And thanks for the comment on the left hand. It was hard but yep, worth it. xD
Also, thanks for the headcannon comment! I had this idea for a while now, I just thought that no one would understand it much, since most (but not all) of the Filipinos agree that Spain was a complete pain in the neck. It's partly true, yet kind of false at the same time. I just imagined that Philippines would be totally submissive to Spain in the first parts of their relationship but then grew more hostile at the near end of their relationship. Er... yep, that was another headcannon of mine... >.> I just have lots of it but I still refuse to make an OC xD
Sorry, I was babbling. Thanks for your hearty comment though!

Yeah. I've always had it that he really did love her like a daughter, and she viewed him as her papa, he just... was misguided at times when it came to managing her, let's just say. I do think that a lot of what she did during that time, she did because she wanted to make him happy and proud of her, but after awhile, she just couldn't take it anymore and snapped, so to speak.
No, no, I like hearing about people's head canons. It's fun. ^w^ And you're welcome.

Oh! Cool! I thought I was babbling lol xD
Haha, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks of Philippines and Spain's relationship as that of parent-child. I just really viewed them that way. And I do agree with what you said that Spain really did just want the best for her but it just went a little more different. In reality, actually, Spain's laws that time were really really humane, and in fact, for the benefit of the people then. How they were practiced was the problem. But I think the reason she would snap is because, in my point of view, she saw how the lesser of her people were being treated, much to Spain's surprise. I don't know, I think I have this headcannon that Spain never really knew how bad her people were being treated.
Kind of like, similar to America and England's relationship during the American revolution? I don't really know a lot of that so I'm not too sure. xD

Naw, not at all.
Oh, really? I didn't know that about Spain's laws at the time. That's interesting. And maybe there's something to that theory, though wouldn't have Philippines have tried to tell him before she decided to rebel?
Mmm, similar, but markedly different. It's complicated.

sketchadoodle09 In reply to X-I-L2048 [2012-10-26 04:42:41 +0000 UTC]

Lol, to be fair, I also only knew that Spain's laws were humane in college. I swear, history was abridged in elementary and high school. Or is it just me... haha. It was always interesting listening to my professor rather than reading it in the text books :I
I like that point. I honestly haven't thought of that, haha. I'm guessing the whole revolution thing for Philippines was a gradual thing. xD
Complicated? The American revolution? Honestly, I don't know a thing about it. Hehe. It would be fun to research on that though. ^_^

X-I-L2048 In reply to sketchadoodle09 [2012-11-01 02:53:18 +0000 UTC]

IKR? That's why I like learning history on my own time. It's so much more interesting that way. And normally any revolution is a gradual one.

Extremely complicated. XD You don't know a thing about it, you say? Well then, let me introduce you to an American television show called "Liberty's Kids," used to teach school-age about the American Revolution (theme song here [link] ) It was one of my favorite TV shows back in the day. As TVTropes says, "Although the series was created for a juvenile audience, it nevertheless takes a relatively sophisticated look at the American Revolution, which highlights not only the heroes and achievements of the American independence movement, but also its less palatable aspects such as the role of slavery, mob violence and the privations the Native Peoples of America suffered in this conflict."
If you want to learn more about the American War for Independence, this show is a terrific place to start. Here's the first episode [link] and here's a map of the original thirteen colonies so you can orient yourself when people are talking about different places if you need to. [link] I hope you enjoy!
