Description A background painting for "Robo-san and Wan-chan," a animated student film I was involved in this past year.

I cannot tell you how invaluable it was owning a copy of The Art of My Neighbor Totoro and being able to read some of the thoughts of one of animations greatest background painters, Kazuo Oga. That man...is the best. Incredible handle on color, composition and all the rest.

In the book he speaks about a particular sequence in Totoro when Mei and Satsuki are separated as the sun is beginning to set. In Robo-san and Wan-chan a similar moment occurs, but the characters have been separated for the whole film instead. I wanted to have everything bathed in a warm, dusky sun to show that night was imminent without actually showing the sunset itself. The sunset itself was reserved for a later shot so it would tie into the emotional climax of the film.
