Looks like quite a story involved with this place. I'm wondering what's around to make building up into the trees desirable. Lots of flooding here? Interesting shapes to the buildings as well...

Thanks! I must admit that there are many experimentations with this piece so I cannot say that it makes 100% sense or is historically correct.
However, my take was that the whole floor is a swampy area with clean water flowing from current above. You can see in the far right that people are gathering water and transporting it up onto the branches. The population here are also escaped slaves back in the 1600s called the Cimaroons I believe. Therefore, alot of the architecture design were based on recycled parts of ships.
I guess the only reason for it to be built that way is:
1. You have vision of invaders.
2. Aesthetically a little more interesting, at least for this view angle.
