Lumos Borealis briskly walked down the school halls, whistling to himself as he went about his usual lunchtime routine: eat his food quickly, avoid the numerous other students that wanted to sit next to him, and head to the library where he would spend the rest of the lunch period. As he rounded the corner to the library, however, a certain filly caught his eye.

He had seen this filly before, her grey coat, her red, crystal-like horn, and her dark-grey pigtails that resembled a thick cloud of smoke. Smoke... was that her name, he wondered. He had heard it in passing before, and he was sure that she had "Smoke" somewhere in her name. It was strange; Lumos knew the names of all his classmates, mainly due to their enthusiasm to be friends with the son of "Spike the Brave and Glorious." They all made a point to let him know their names, all except her. Heck, the only times he'd seen her was in the few classes they had together.

The filly was also on her way to the library, her head tilted down as her gaze was fixed on a large red tome that she was levitating in front of her. Narrowing his eyes for a moment, Lumos suddenly recognized what book that was, and he quickened his pace to catch up with the filly.

"Hey!" he called out as he made his way towards her.

The filly looked up and shifted her gaze to the side as Lumos caught up to her. "Yes?"

Lumos gave her a toothy smile. "Sorry for prying, but is that Volume 3 of Advanced Charms for Young Magic Students?"

"Yes," the filly nodded. "Did you intend on checking it out? I was on my way to return it."

He shook his head, unfazed by her cool, stoic tone. "Nah, I just thought it was cool to see somepony else reading it. I thought I was the only one in this whole school that read these books. You practice magic?"

"Yes," she nodded one more. "I've been tinkering with the spells in this book for the past few days."

All of a sudden, Lumos's eyes brightened up. "Days? Really? Wow, it took me weeks to get through this book! You must be awesome at magic!" He was about to gush some more, but then he mentally smacked himself. "Oh, jeez. I'm sorry. I didn't even ask you for your name."

She closed the book and turned to face him. "Smoky. Smoky Amaryllis."

"Nice to meet ya, Smoky! I'm-"

"Lumos Borealis?" she finished for him. "I've noticed that our classmates are quite fond of you. I'm rather perplexed as to why someone as outgoing as yourself is talking to me, of all ponies."

"Well, those guys aren't really my 'friends'..." Lumos admitted. "They just wanna hang out with me because of who my dad is. I don't really know any of them like that."

Smoky tilted her head. "I see. How surprising."

"I dunno if she's being sarcastic or not," Lumos thought. "Hard to tell with the way she talks, honestly..." He let out a nervous chuckle. "Well, since we're both headed to the library, maybe we can hang out? I'd love to know what other books you're into."

Smoky stared back at him, and for the first time in this conversation, she smiled.

"Yes. I would like that."

And so we have the beginning of Lumos and Smoky's friendship. This takes place when the two of them were about ten or eleven years old, so they've only been friends for a few short years.

Smoky finds Lumos to be good company, as well as a great partner for learning and practicing magic. While initially surprised at his enthusiasm to meet her, she warms up to him and considers him her best friend, and Lumos returns those feelings in kind.
