Wait, is Luna exceptionally good at chess? Or is Celestia just terrible at it? The age difference between them is never specified, but I've always assumed that Celestia is significantly older than her little sister, perhaps the same as the age difference between Twilight and Shining.

True, we are never told exactly what the difference is. Perhaps they are twin sisters, a mere three minutes apart. Perhaps Celestia is several thousand years Luna's elder. All we know is that Luna is younger, or is said to be younger. The great thing is that, when not told, fanworks can just go with whatever they want.
