I'm not very sure...
The only link I have with his fear is in the Van Helsing movie where he is in a farm which is burning, trying to save Dr. Frankeinstein (his inventor), but in the novel of Mary Shelley there's no reference about it...
Especially because in Van Helsing are mixed two different eras, since Count Vlad III = Dracula is lived during the XV centurie and in the Bram Stoker's novel he's still alive (XIX centurie), while Frankeinstein, always referring at Shelley's novel, is supposed to be "created" in the XVIII centurie...
If I have to say briefly I don't know too, but maybe the producers had wanted to refer the movie at the latest productions of their story so they didn't have to explaine their stories one by one...
