After multiple sketches I finally landed on something palatable. It's always tricky to get two characters properly on the same page.

These two. Oh boy. They used to be friends and just fledgelings when the war broke out and Dali got mauled by subette, costing her both of her wings and an arm. Morr took a crossbow bolt to the side defending Dali but thanks to her they survived.

Soari culture is quite brutal. Morr quickly learned that other soari were interested in helping her only so far as she wasn't dragging Dali along as well. No one wanted anything to do with an adolescent cripple, which overrode their interest in nurturing Morr's potential. She grew resentful of them and very protective of Dali in exchange. If it weren't for her physical strength and dedication, Dali would have perished. And surely other soari would have been happy to see that happen, as in their eyes she was just a dead weight.

As time passed and Morr grew to be arguably the beefiest soari around, the rest of the society had to start taking her seriously. Begrudgingly though, as I've mentioned before. She had a habit of not just taking care of reject offspring others had no interest in, but using her size and strength to force other soari to partake in that habit. The sad reality is that some of Morr's care subjects don't make it regardless due to harsh conditions, which only makes the more traditionally minded soari even saltier for being forced to waste resources on them. Old grumps like Pertrowoel definitely among them. Morr doesn't care what they think - the way she sees it, they left Dali for dead so if they can't defend their food from Morr they might as well starve and die then too.

When I describe it like that it sounds almost noble and altruistic. The shades starts to expose themselves in closer inspection of her relationship with Dali, who has remained completely dependent on Morr for most of her life. Not just for food and protection, but socially as well. No wings, no chance to participate in most of the things soari do. Morr is not only okay with this arrangement, but seems to actively prefer it over any relationship where she doesn't have full control. She infantilizes Dali and restricts her under the pretense of safety, and although the intimacy of their relationship is enthusiastically consensual, one can only wonder if Dali truly has had any choice in the matter. As if it has ever truly been an option for her to refuse Morr's treatment. Good but undeniably obsessed treatment.

Dali stays pretty for Morr and buries her personhood deep out of necessity. I know she can be more spicy when Morr isn't around, because the other soari don't dare touch her - as long as she doesn't say anything too heinous. In physical strength Morr is uncontested, but she doesn't have the gyrokinesis skills the older war-hardened soari do. The current soari society laws favor her, but without them she would have to think twice before bossing around some of the soari who have long held a grudge against her.

Gahh I have much more to say but I've already rambled on too long. Let's leave it for another drawing.
