Getting hyped for Pokemon Sun and Moon~!
I started this piece of art as soon as the news came out. I knew there'd be a million doodles of the starters and hastily made fanart of the legends out in a few hours, but I wanted to make something proper that would stick around for longer.
While working on this I got the privilege to do research on the designs a lot more than most other artists who jumped on the bandwagon early and made fanart as soon as possible. I got to truly appreciate how complicated yet geometric the lion's head truly is, and I found all the inconsistencies between Sugimori's art and the 3D models. (oh and there were quite a few!) Finding a good middle line while balancing between the pokemon style and my own was a refreshing challenge one does not always get while making fanart.
And, like, the lion's body is not shown well in any of the footage so far so I had to improvise but we'll find out how well I did sooner or later.
"Lunaala" was my fave at first due to the attack we see it perform in the trailer, but "Solgaleo" took my heart during this piece. So it's Sun for me, which one are you guys getting?

Right now, I think I'm getting Moon, but I might still change my mind. I never use legendaries, so it doesn't really matter to me that I think Lunaala looks cooler than Solgaleo.

I know that feeling. What does one legendary and cover art mean when the region's look could depend on your version choice (like in BW2) + all the exclusives? Another reason for me to get Sun is that my husband is getting Moon, so we can in a way both get both experiences.

"Pokemon doesn't look like pokemon anymore" is such a weird concept to me. I mean some have always been odd and some have always been more commonplace, but it's not like the company has a strict guideline to follow.

I guess what I mean is that the style overall seems to have shifted quite a bit from where it started. Not to say that improving is a bad thing, cause it would be bad never to improve. I just mean that it seems the general style and feel is not quite the same as it used to be, of course that could be simply due to the fact that they are newer and don't have the nostalgic feeling that the originals had. It is also probably due to how much extra detail Pokemon tend to have nowadays, sometimes it seems there is excessive detail. But thinking back to the original games, they just couldn't put as much detail since the games were so limited in their capabilities, so it is also understandable to be wanting to add even more details with the increasing capabilities of their systems.Β
So quite simply, my standpoint is just that I don't get the same feeling from the new guys as the older ones but with improvement, you just can't expect to have things "stay the same" otherwise it would indeed get boring after awhile. I always have such mixed feelings with new Pokemon, but overall I do get very excited to see new ones.

Deeply impressive and amazingly drawn. It isn't difficult to see a lot of effort has been put into these two, and your style for this is incredible. The different backgrounds for each of them are really something as well. Nice work here.
