This is something that drives me nuts, and it happens in literally like 90% of all visual novels, even from big studios with large portfolios.* What puzzles me is that this is perspective 101 stuff (literally explained in the first 10 pages of my perspective for artists book that I picked up a long ass time ago).
Props to you for learning how to do it right. :>
* I suspect it happens cause the illustrators don't usually step into BG work and vice versa, and communication is minimal. Fun fact, if you go back and look at Clannad from Key, they had backgrounds done right. Then, in their subsequent 8 visual novels, they did it wrong.

Thanks for the tutorial.
I can relate to the zzzzz part of this sooo well.
It's my cousin's 15th birthday tomorrow and I was stressing out about his present (I only found out a few hours ago that it was his bday tomorrow). I live in a different country from him and don't know much about what he's interested in because I haven't seen him in ages so I just decided to paint a picture of him, my sister and myself together in paint tool sai. I just finished the line art (it's 1:51 am so it's been around 4 hours of straight work). On top of that I had an english essay to finish for school (finished it around 9:30 but I still have to spice it up in Word. Add some fancy font to it and yeah...) And I've got school tomorrow. Lucky we start school late! I'm used to starting around 7:30 or 8am but here for some reason we start at 9am which is a huge relief.
Anyways your art really inspires me. You're really tallented!

Great tutorial, thank you and deji, this should help me a bunch in the future, I've always had trouble figuring out the BG proportions in relation to the characters haha.
Β
Personally though, I like the layout of the first BG better. Β I know the obvious issue is the building heights, but I feel, while correct in proportion, the "camera" is placed too high up. Β It'll probably look better with the dialogue box attached to the bottom, but at the moment, the bare BG looks quite imbalanced, with the bottom side too empty compared to the top, where everything's cramped together. This is probably not a big issue for a smaller game, but if you want to have a BG gallery showcasing original BGs, it's something to take into consideration.
Just my two cents, feel free to ignore =v=

This is very helpful and very well explained. I'm glad you felt like sharing with us what you learnt ! >w<
Just a curiosity: wouldn't it have been easier for you to just fix the small-looking-building and then just make the characters smaller instead of redoing the whole background ? I'm just talking in terms of amount of work. You sure had to work harder to redo everything.Β
Anyway, I have to admit both versions look great and the layout of the background is very nice. I don't know if I would have noticed they weren't proportioned..oh well.Β
As a final note , you're drawing and colouring style is very lovely , I really like it, it makes everything look prettier. :3

I thought that as well but when I used the perspective lines that I had placed for the image and created my hanging mock person from the horizon line the proportions didn't match up. The closer the buildings are to the from of the picture the bigger they will become and the further away, the smaller they will. For the old picture I didn't keep that in mind and everything is at the wrong size and proportions but no worries, I didn't mind doing the work at all, since it was a mistake that I created and I really wanted to learn as much as I could so that my images turn out the best that they can. Thank you for asking me that question though because it's definitely something that I was confused about when I first started using the mock up characters and I tried that out first before finally finding the correct way of drawing the visual novel background.
That's so sweet of you to say that about my background though! <3 Thank you so much!

Thank you for replying. I see your point there.Β
I have to agree with you , I probably would have done the same seeing the circumstances. I guess sometimes it's almost easier to redo everything once you know what you want to fix.Β
I really mean it, it has a very nice feeling and nothing seems overlooked. :3
No problem, keep up with the good work, I'm looking forward to seeing more works from you ! Watched !<3
