Description On May 4, 1970, four students at Kent State University were killed during a protest on campus against the Vietnam war. They were also protesting the National Guard's occupancy on campus during the week.

On April 19th, 2007, 32 students at Virginia Tech University were killed by a fellow student, who in the end, killed himself as well.

On May 4, 2007, a memorial ceremony was held on blanket hill (where the original protest was held) at Kent State University, commemorating the 37th anniversary of the shootings in 1970. The liberty bell was rung 36 times to honor the victims of both 1970 and 2007.
