Description A star Wars OC of my own creation, at the time she was the only female Grand Admiral in fanfic.  Mind you, that was 20 years ago.

Created in Azalea's Dolls Sci Fi Warrior dollmaker and edited in Gimp to add the cap we see on all Imperial officers and crewers.  This version of the cadet outfit is based on Timothy Zahn's description in the 2017 novel "Thrawn."

I published a story with Karana in a fanfic back in 1996 at the request of a few male friends who wanted more Thrawn stories and thought I had some good ideas.  I thought Thrawn needed a foil, someone to play off of, and perhaps someone who could give us a glimpse into his thought processes.  Karana is every bit as cunning as Thrawn and quite a good strategist herself, however she does not have the same level of patience he does, and certainly she cannot match his gift for strategy (no one really can, can they?) which, in the end, gets her into trouble.

I fully intended her to die after the battle of Bilbringi, executed by Thrawn for betraying him and his vision of the Empire.  Yes, I expected that Thrawn would lose the Bilbringi battle in the end by some miracle the New Republic pulled off because the good guys MUST win in a Star Wars novel.  However, I thought Thrawnwould live to fight another day, just like Vader or some of the bad guys from the comics.  I thought he would return in any future books, the new and improved villain leading the Empire for another round of galactic war.  I thought that he would get to serve justice to Karana for her betrayal, and she would die bravely, face to face with him, by his own hand, as she said she deserved (rather than be executed by Rukh, that is, which would have demeaned her).  It would have been a glorious death scene, bittersweet for Thrawn, despite his triumph over her, and with Karana realizing in the end that she was never a match for him, making the reason for her betrayal pointless [that is explained in another pic I posted].  High drama.

I never expected what Timothy Zahn did to resolve the fact that Thrawn was winning the war and the New Republic was going to go down in flames. [[SPOILER!!]]  Mr. Zahn told me at DragonCon in 2012 that Thrawn was winning, so he had to be taken out of the equation in order for the Empire to fail, therefore Thrawn had to die.

I thought about rewriting the stuff I had up to that point, having Thrawn execute Karana Saren before going to Bilbringi, but I felt that it would have been highly out of character for him to waste a valuable resource like a skilled leader who thought much the same way he did and would have been an asset to him in a crucial battle.  He knew Karana hated the New Republic and would fight for the Empire, whatever her own disagreements with Thrawn might be.  With that reasoning, I could not do the rewrite, and Karana lived, but with all the same realizations that her betrayal was for nothing because Thrawn was, in fact, the better choice to lead the Empire.  In fact, she blames herself for his death, feeling that if he had not been distracted by thoughts of how she had turned on him, he would have seen Rukh's attack before it came and been able to stop it.
