Looks like the woolly adelgids have left their mark in the conifers...

No, my friend. On June 10th, 1999 a gasoline pipeline ruptured and dumped gasoline into the creek. At 0502 pm the fumes exploded into a fireball. What you see are the trees that died from the heat. But you are also seeing the recovery and new growth.

For as many people that use the park, we were lucky to only have three fatalities.

Β Well... you could take a photo of the pony.

Thanks for the links, and I agree that 2 and 4 are very cool! I have a friend in a wheelchair that would love 4! It would be hard to get them to come back. Β

how many years ago was that fire you were talking about?

Jun 10th, 1999; so almost twenty years ago. I had driven into town from the South, just after the fireball, and saw the curtain of smoke going up the the creek bed. The gasoline had almost made it to the lower falls in town, by the jail and post office, before it caught fire.

Yes. And we were lucky with only three dead due to how popular the park and trails are.

yes was it vandals that started the fire or natural gas deposits? read something about gas and wasn't sure

A chain link of things contributed to it. The pipeline rupture area showed stressed areas that corresponded to the teeth of an excavator bucket that was digging at the water treatment plant next to it. They think the excavator operator might have hit the pipeline while digging. Best guess of what caused the pipeline to fail was a valve miles away causing a reflected pressure surge to come back and hit the weakened spot.
