What a magnificent train wreck of a character. She was basically the villain. Not villainous per se, but her desire to protect humanity led to a war that ended the lives of millions
She lied to and used those closest to her. Amethyst, Jasper, even Greg. And now she leaves her son to deal with the fallout.
She may never have intended to be a villain, but she is truly the worst gem

You got me thinking.
In defense to what happened:
With rainbow quartz both Pearl and Rose were in on the fassade. They might've just called themselves Quartz too keep the cover.
Amethist and Steven however did not know any better. The way how Smoky figured their her name seemed rather like a logical conclusion, based on invalid facts.
All in all the way in which the collective Memory of a fusion works and how it knows its name is all pretty vague and not entirely explained.
I would just wait and see how the rest of the gems react to this revelation.
maybe the questions will clear themselves.
