"S. . .skye," he mumbled hoarsely. He still couldn't move his legs. Skye had to know he was a goner at this point. . .Pikachu lay just above his head, barely breathing.
"Please, Skye. . .t-take Pikachu. . .get out of here. T-that Pokémon. . .it'll. . ." Zygarde had already caused so much destruction. Any more and Skye would have no chance or hope of escape. Ash had done his best to push Skye out of the way of the falling boulders in the underground labyrinth, but if he didn't leave now, it would've all been in vain.
He gave Skye a weak smile, his eyes misting over.
“I… I love you both… p-please… s'why I…"

Ah, my worst, most painful AU; Ash Needs Legs. Initially written in April '14, the AU was obviously a long time before XY&Z was even announced, so most of what happens in XY&Z is non-canon.

Basically, this AU involves Ash dying, becomes a ghost and follows a newly immortal Skye as he travels the world searching for the Zygarde to avenge Ash.

For some context of this scene;
While travelling to Snowbelle City, the group stops to take a break. Ash grabs and drags Skye away to explore, ending up stumbling across Terminus Cave. Ash insists they go inside and Skye reluctantly agrees.
They quickly get lost. As they try to find their way out, they find Zygarde instead. Not happy being disturbed by some humans, Zygarde goes nuts.
Cue Ash and Skye doing their best to escape while fending off Zygarde. They get their asses kicked hard, but they keep going. Zygarde uses Land's Wrath, which causes a cave in. Ash pushes Skye out of the way and is crushed.
Ash and Skye end up escaping, thanks to Xerneas. Ash actually survives the cave in, but becomes paralysed from the waist down. He doesn't experience this however, as he falls into a coma and passes away after Delia pulls the plug on his life support, believing that if Ash ever did wake up, he wouldn't want to live mentally and physically disabled.
No worries about Pikachu, though! He is simply unconscious, but that eye is a goner. Better than dyin' tho, amiright
