Description: Cold, treacherous, unforgiving, and hostile. These characteristics are often associated with the gelid planet, arctic-113. Snow and ice rest everywhere you look, however an ethereal beauty to this world does reside amongst the endless fields of snow that blanket it. When dawn breaks, a brilliant array of colors flutter through the air, guided by sunlight — and at night, flickering stars dapple the sky. A dense sheet of ice floats atop the frigid waters of the north, spanning across hundreds of miles. Cracks give wake to ravines; rifts tearing a gateway to the sodden world below, where a hidden ecosystem thrives. The spectralium sea caw, scientifically dubbed bal rutilaena, is a gregarious species of marine mammal who inhabits the northernmost sea ice of arctic-113. Spectralium sea caws follow a nocturnal way of life; basking in under the sun at day, and awaking at night to hunt. Fossil evidence suggests that spectralium sea caws are distant relatives to carrium’s caw — a land-dwelling species of intelligent pack hunters who prowl the salrehk coastlines. Scientists speculate that populations of carrium’s caw that resided further up north gradually drove their prey to extinction. Due to biological pressure, these populations began to take to the seas in pursuit of new prey. Through years of evolution, they developed a more streamline body fitted with both hydrodynamic pelage and insulating blubber. Other alterations to their anatomy include the animals arms and legs, which gradually morphed into more flipper-like appendages overtime. Vestigial claws remain present on both pectoral flippers. Their hind flippers possess the ability to rotate beyond the pelvic girdle, giving them improved locomotion on land much like an otariidae.

Akin to their land cousin, spectralium sea caws possess four facial flaps located above the maxilla. When unfurled, a system of highly adept electroreceptors are exposed. These electroreceptors allow the animal to detect even the slightest of motion in their surrounding environment — which is especially useful when hunting. The electroreceptors do not only aid in detecting prey, but can also be used as a way to communicate with other spectralium sea caws. Spectralium sea caws can communicate through expelling heat from these organs, creating a bioluminescence that also releases pheromones. During this process, the bioluminescent lights flicker. Pheromones are detected and translated through small, sensitive hairs found on their maxillary barbels. In addition to bioluminescence, spectralium sea caws also utilize biofluorescence in their display behavior. While donning more dark and mute shades of purplish pelage, spectralium sea caws have unique patches of hair that are designed to absorb UV light. Because of this, their pelage radiates with intricate orange and white markings at night. Spectralium sea caws boast this captivating look, swimming gracefully underwater to draw in unsuspecting prey with its allure. Spectralium sea caws primarily feed on fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods.

Spectralium sea caws can weigh anywhere between 1,600 - 3,200 lbs, while measuring at around 12 - 15.7 ft in length. On average, spectralium sea caws live to be about 93 years old, however some specimens have lived longer — the most notable of which living to be 100. Spectralium sea caws establish social hierarchies, where older males lead pods of 15 or more individuals. These dominant males are responsible for teaching their kin how to hunt and socialize, while other adults provide food to feed young. Some studies suggest that unique cultures and languages may exist for different spectralium sea caw populations.
