Description Now Ian Malcolm sees the 2007 novel Boot Camp by Todd Strasser and, like me, thinks it's one big pile of shit.

For those of you who've seen my previous posts about this novel before, you definitely know it's my most hated novel of all time ever since I read it in my first year of high school. Sure the main kid did make mistakes that got him sent to the camp, but the torture he had to endure there were way worse than his actions. The characters already present at the camp were infuriatingly unlikeable who constantly attack Garrett in both physical and psychological ways whenever he tried to rebel, even at points when he did something that was wan't too big of a deal.

Eventually when the abuse became too much for him, he tried to escape the camp with two other campers he managed to befriend only for their bounty hunters to get in a dangerous position so he rescued them upon feeling guilty. But that saving only resulted him being brought back to the lake where he got beaten even harder than before to the point he broke down and accepted it, which caused him to be reprogrammed into a perfect robot.

The ending was also abrupt and extremely anticlimactic. His parents eventually find out what really happens at the camp and arrive to pick him up with an investigator. Garrett admits that he was beaten but says he deserved it and the book just ends right there in a way that was a massively disappointing way in which the hero succumbed to the ways of the villains and didn't win.

I mean I get the ending was supposed to feel realistic, but more could have added to show what else happened rather than just end it there in the way that feels like the biggest middle finger to the reader rooting for Garrett to win only to get beaten far more than he deserved.
