What surprises me is that there are apparently several people with enough disposable income lying around that they can afford to spend hundreds of dollars purchasing a character design. Maybe it's because I'm an adult with actual bills and such, but spending $700 on an adoptable (that you may or may not ever do anything with. Let's be honest. Most adopts are purchased on impulse, and then the buyer never does anything with them) seems a bit financially irresponsible to me

They should donate the money to charity if they don't need it.

Oh I don't care what people spend their money on, and paying top dollar for quality art is totally understandable. I love purchasing commissions. I paid quite a bit for a professional company to make a custom figurine of one of my characters. The difference here is that it was a character of mine that I had loved and developed for years, and a lot of saving and researching went into the purchase of that. Like I mentioned before, adopts are far too often impulse buys that never develop into anything for the purchaser. It's like going to the store and buying a new outfit, but then never ever wearing it. That's what happens to the vast majority of adoptables. Spending $750 on anything that will just sit in your closet with the tags on for the rest of its life just seems reckless to me

Great looking character, I would be careful selling characters, I think a year or 2 ago, people were
selling their OC, and someone bid a high price, paid for it, then they did it to many people, then charged
back and those people were each out almost 2k or so... That person scammed them very badly, I heard
and saw people warning about it, so I would keep in mind, and be careful. I wouldn't want an artist who
makes such beautiful OC get scammed or so, I would be sure those people who bid are legit, and not just
giving a price to do so.

o_o If buying a character is giving them the rights to the character, why can we not resell something that belongs to use?

the design still belongs to the original artist, so they can set rules the way they wish and the buyer should adhere to them and buy it knowing that they can't resell. she is allowing trading and gifting so i think it's fine since sometimes people try to buy characters and make a profit off of them by selling them for higher than they got them for, etc.
and i think it's cause even though you're buying the rights to use the character as your own, it doesn't necessarily make them completely owned by you, just the rights to use them as if they were your own character in stories or rp and whatnot since the original design will always by copyright to the artist who created them.
Most people don't like to buy characters they know they can't resell but it's up to the buyer and some don't mind tbh =w=

To me, if you cannot do what you want with it then you do not truly "own" it. But yeah, I do see what you mean, I think rules applied to something you paid in full for is silly. Though, that's why it's always good to just commission your own characters vs buying someone else's.

If you were to make further profit of the designs you've purchased from them, you should at least pay 400% of the original price or give them a certain amount of % of the incomes you make through it. This is very similar to buying an idea from a designer, if you don't pay the full price (~400% of 'actual price') you will not get the full rights either.
Online and for adoptables there are probably different copyright rights but I'm not going into that, so let's just assume that it's the same for now ;;

true, but i think it's different since it's not a physical object and more of an idea/concept =w=
and honestly it's not really unfair or anything since you can never define what the "full" price for a character design is since professionals do them for much higher prices than people sell them for on deviantart and the intended use affects the price. So in reality a lot of people probably underprice due to people not being able to or wanting to pay high for character designs on places like dA.
Also it's really up to the buyer to judge whether they'd rather spend on their own characters or buy another's since even for artists like myself who can make and draw our own original designs, i find myself falling in love w/ a lot of others and wish to have them as my own and for a lot of people who cannot design or draw their own characters, buying is a nice alternative if they can afford the money. And not everyone has the creativity to think of designs that some others can so it's kind of nice to have that option available to you if you happen to find a design you really like.

I use a G-Pen setting usually. nothing special. lol. I don't even have a particular technique yet, just lots of trial and error at the moment.
