Description
The cenote of Dzitnup or X'keken near Valladolid in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. A cenote is a natural sinkhole resulting from the collapse of limestone rock that exposes groundwater. The term is associated with the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, where cenotes were commonly used for water supplies by the ancient Maya, and occasionally for sacrificial offerings.
