Description

Thirty Third in my Constellations series of stamps

Dorado is a constellation in the Southern sky, and represents the Dolphinfish. It was created in the Sixteenth Century. In the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries the constellation was named Xiphias, the Swordfish. However, the name Dorado for the constellation dominated, and when the 88 Constellations were officially recognised in 1928, it was listed under this name. Dorado is where the South Ecliptic Pole is located; the actual location is at the head of the dolphinfish.  Part of the Large Magellanic Cloud is within this Constellation, and it is rich in deep-sky objects. SN1987A, a Supernova recorded in 1987, is located in this Constellation. Open Clusters, Globular Clusters, Galaxies and Nebulas are in this constellation. Delta Doradus, a star in this constellation, is the Southern Pole Star of the Moon and Jupiter
