You named him after the protagonist of that game Rex was playing in the Toy Story world, a nod to both Final Fantasy and to the introduction for Toy Story 2 in one swoop. That was a pretty cool Easter Egg in my opinion.
I'm liking this series so far, and I really hope Riku and Kairi get Sora out into the open water, like what Dory did for Destiny the Whale Shark and her Beluga Whale tank mate.

I think its a fun idea but I don't really see the reason to make them kingdom hearts characters. Why not make new characters for your own story?
