I like to work with mermaid mythology alot. I tweak them a bit. To make new slants to myths. The idea here is mermaid as sorcerress of the sea ..catching rainwater because its pure and salt free for a spell... a rare and important element.
I made other mermaids like tsunami summoner to explain why the tsunami exists. Theres also a mermaid of mine called "Invocation" very similar to this one.

The tails I like to use my imagination on. Its funner than making literal scales.

Very cool...It is wonderful to have such meaning behind a piece. Some day I will have one of your full scupltures!

Ill be listing full sculpts on etsy from time to time with the beads ,but Im terrible at consistantly listing. The only downsides are its hard to fix a fair price and its first come first served unless you put a "resereved for" notice on it.
lately Ive been doing commissions, but Im starting to feel I need a break from that.

There's Briar my ball jointed doll. Shes 400,but they do have a payment plan. Of course shes an unpainted undressed doll canvas. So , its not like having an original fully made by me.

I'll just keep collecting your smaller pieces till someday I'll surprise you with buying a bigger one. I understand difficutly in pricing. I can't imagine how much time each piece must take. I have a hard time pricing my beadwork (then again I don't sell much, mostly give it away) because it takes so long to make, but most people don't want to pay what the time would be worth. Kind of a struggle.

true its one of the hardest things and on ebay I didnt have to think about it. I let the bidders decide what things were worth.

I have done the seedbead work too and I know what you mean. The time in vestment is phenomenal and you have to do it for love because people wont pay an hourly wage for a peice.
Wait probably 75 years and those beaded peices will then be worth alot.

Wow, all that detail -the tail, the cabbage leaf/bowl -damn!!

I really admire how the tail and bowl look almost like glass or a very shiny wax. Beautiful!!

Love it when you go nuts with the minute detailing, it's a real treasure/pleasure for the eyes.

I was really proud of my mermaid tails. I never really tried to add scales. I just went heywire with abstract patterns. someday Ill get around to a real mermaid with scales and fin.

I know I loved the bowl. wish you could see the gold inside better in this shot. her hair originaly was differnt. She had shaved head adn only a few peices of hair ,but my freind said your not leaving it like that are you! So I gave her normal hair.

I don't know...so many people do normal fish-like scales, which are still beautiful, but your take on her tail is refreshing and unique. It just adds something different and eye-opening, you know?

Oh yes, glad you added more hair, too!

True I just thought maybe I should try and see how I like that. No rule says it has to be all scale. I can mix the two.

Yeah I know and thats good! But somehow the so obvious concept of trying to make a mermaid that lieraly had a fish tail didnt occure to me till I saw other sculpters had scales.

I have to admit that it would be interesting to see your rendition of fish scales. I've noticed that alot of artists do them differently, which is always cool.

A mixture of scales and your minute detailing would be very lovely, I think.

I think so too. I used to do mermaids often ,but recently just havent been inspired.

You should be proud of them--I was just admiring this one for having that seaweed/bark/what have you texture instead of scales.

Sleetwealth In reply to Bright-Circle [2009-04-18 02:29:41 +0000 UTC]

Its a faux blue green jade I was trying to make. I think it looks like pate de vere. Which I was all happy with. Then I added depth and texture to the tail with black and umber oil paint. It cures up matte finish and contrasts with the glossy underclay.

I think I may have to try both together. Some scales and abstract
