Description A shot inspired by my dad, whos assistance was instrumental in getting this shot!

I wanted to go full out, I didn't want to forsake quality by using a higher ISO, or use a larger aperture to get a faster shutter speed. I used a tripod, I used ISO 100, and I changed the exposure settings, I changed the evaluative metering. I wanted to be honest to myself and look back and think, I couldn't have gone back and done it better.

But I also want to know what you guys think, your opinions are very valuable to me, and I mean it so please. Let me here what you think

wow, this is just a very very nice shot. Lots of skill involved I would say. The DoF is very nicely done, the focus could not have been better. The light is very nice. But the best thing about it, I think, is the contrast colors you have used. Especially the yellow vs. blue. Very nice. Brings out the colors excellently

While I'm totally new to photography myself I have to agree with farcry77 [link] about the overexposure. Just because your histogram says everything is okay doesn't mean it's not overexposed from a subjective standpoint, only from a technical standpoint. Don't get me wrong, I think the bright spot behaves much like a rim light and the image would have less impact where it absent.

I do love your image and would like to know a bit more about how you created this picture if you would? How did you feel a slower shutter speed and smaller aperature benefitted this image as opposed to the result a faster shutter and larger aperature would have provided? Did you try these settings at all or did you go in knowing what you wanted? What exposure settings did you change and how did you go about metering your subject?

Sigh... ah the questions ya get from an absolute rookie eh?...hehehe...

SlinkyJynx In reply to Deighvyd [2007-04-06 10:13:51 +0000 UTC]

I know I've only mentioned the histogram, but monitor calibration is another point to consider. I work with calibrated monitors and while there is a bright band, it's not near overexposure, you and farcry are the only two to have noticed it apparantly (?)

Sure, my technique...Well I kinda went in knowing what I wanted, but as with everything it never turns out exactly how you planned..I wanted the slower shutter speed to compensate for the ISO, the aperture is at f/5.6 which is one of my favourites (it seems to work with just about anything!). By using a tripod and ISO 100 I eliminated noice and grain, which would have ruined the smoothness of the flower.

Also, don't put yourself down as being a rookie, I'm still in my first 9 months of photography so I'm pretty new at this too...just persevere and keep going!

You know, you're totally right about monitor calibration. I didn't even think about it when critiquing you work, and sorry for that. It's actually one of the reasons that I haven't posted any photos of my own yet. I'm waiting until I get the right software and calibration equipment before I go posting my own work. I've actually just ordered Adobe Lightroom and CS3, and this weekend I'll be heading down to the local camera shop to pick up a tri-pod, back-pak and something for monitor calibration. Hopefully I'll be able to afford to pick up a macro lens in mid May some time. I've only been going at this seriously for about 2 months now but I'm having a blast.. I played with a friends Olympus 1.2mp for about 4 months prior and really enjoyed myself so I went out and got a real camera and absolutely love it.

You didn't mention what kind of lens you used?... was it a macro or ? And do you have any other advice in regards to what you use for monitor calibration?

I use a Sigma 150mm Macro lens, its the best of its kind. As for calibration there are good options out there and the Huey is a good one Good luck with everything!
