In my opinion this is a masterpiece. The painting tells no story, because the story is created in the mind of the beholder. The body language of the two men and the mysterious gift allows almost any interpretation.

I like the bright sunlight then the shadow on his face.  I think he is crying and touched.  But with the shadow, the observer can see their own conclusion.  The shadow on his face against the bright sunlight was rather clever.  Left the man's expression 'up' for interpretation.
