His character ""Pogo" Bidiford Poole" gets a great, unexpected come-uppance in the film. Pogo is a charmng ladies' man (he and Palmer were married, begetting Reynolds, but Palmer has divorced him for steadfast - if boring - Gary Merrill). Pogo has returned for his daughter's wedding, but also to try to use his charm to win back Palmer. But as everything seems to be succeeding Reynolds actually pulls the rug out from under Astaire by hoping to be able to take care of him in his approaching old age. It is not the response he sort.
