You did pretty well on this, you just needed a little more consistancy across the photo, not sure what camera you have, but a lot of digital cameras allow you to fix the white balance, also turning the flash power down or if you don't have the option, you can stick some tissues over it to make the light from it less harsh... just need to play around with things like this (digital cameras make life so easy in this respect)...
