slyshand — 02 Walk Cycle

I'm up to level 2, walk cycles.

This took a long time, I tried to really scrutinize the walk cycle as best I could, I feel like I've done this one same walk cycle over and over throughout the years, and while I like where I got it to, I still want to do it again.  And again, and again till I get it a little better the next time.  And then I wanna do a different style of walk cycle that better represents an actual mood and not just a technical walk cycle...  its harder than all the things I've done up to this point.

I think its 24 frames a second, and there are 24 frames if I remember right

Well, you're looking at, getting the weight into the step.
The up and down of the hips.
The swing of the arms.
The bend of the knees.
The rotation of the hips.
The twist of the upper body.
The right amount of head movement.
Paying attention to the shoulders.
Making sure the arch of the foot works.
Controlling jitters.
Working on keeping the character from shrinking and growing.
And that's just what I can remember.

The more you do it, the better.

Have you read the book, The Animator's Survival Kit?  More than half of it is walk / run cycles.

The book is a great source of reference, and significantly cheaper.  The starting point for the walk is either the contact point or the down pose.  So you make a left and right version and start breaking down the middle frames of all of those, really take a look at that book.

On the subject of books, read "Drawn to Life: 20 years of Disney Master Classes: Vol 1 and Vol 2" they're fantastic books on gesture drawing and Disney methodology and getting ideas down that get right to the core of how to go about drawing.  They are my favorite books on the subject of drawing with animation in mind.

i like the smaller details. like the shoulder blade in the back and his pants crossing in the front and back. plus the arm and hand movements are great. GAAAAAH! SO MUCH TALENT
