Really well done!

Do you use gradient mesh for some of the shading or some other technique?

Thanks!

Yup, gradient mesh all the way!

Impressive! I'm going to keep working at them to improve my skill. They're kind of tricky but you're proof that they're worth learning!

well thank you for the kind words I actually did all of my vector cars a couple of years back. The Mustang was my first, which was a class project and I enjoyed it so much I made several more. Each one took me a couple of weeks to complete because I broke it down into pieces and created a gradient mesh for each piece.

That's dedication! I'm having a hard time figuring out where the mesh points will appear, and in getting them to appear where I want them, in the direction I want them - still trying to figure that stuff out. I'm stalled at the moment but will keep trying.

The gradient mesh tool wasn't used very often then. My instructor, at the time taught the class to use solid shapes and gradients, and I came across a tutorial for the gradient mesh (not knowing what it was) and I figured I could apply that technique to the car. There weren't many tutorials at the time so I just had to mess around with the various mesh points. You should be able to find some decent mesh tool tutorials by now since I've seen the technique used quite often within the last couple of years.

If I come across something good I'll send it your way!

I've seen lots of tutorials for the gradient mesh and used quite a few of them. None have explained how to get points where you need them, or in the angle you need them, reliably. The only thing said on that score has been that it takes a LOT of practice to start figuring it out, so I've assumed that's the case. I have learned that it's easiest to use a multitude of small meshes rather than a few larger ones but I haven't figured out how to make that look like one cohesive piece yet. You can see in my red pepper image that I'm still struggling with that. It would help if I had more time to work on them but I'll get it eventually.

If you create a simple shape like a box, rectangle, or a sphere, the mesh points will spread evenly over the shape and you can use the tool to click wherever you want there to be a mesh point. I did it the hard way though and just used the pen tool to create each different segment of the car, and so my mesh points were all over the place and it made it more difficult.

I'm going to focus on doing just that for a while - making a simple shape and adding mesh points. Thanks for the tip! I have to work on roses and hearts for a project so I'll start there but won't have time for much else for several days. I'll keep poking around in your gallery to remind myself of what's possible!
