Description So, having floated a battleship and used Tesla based lift generators for a fighter aircraft I couldn't see why armoured vehicles should get away without a bit of imaginary world war 2 timeline modifications

I'm thinking about repulser or field generation which, on this model, has additional emitters for augmenting the armour. I chose a Jagdpanther figuring that these vehicles would be quite maneuverable and so perhaps negating the need for a turret - the Jagdpanther is also one mean looking bitch which was the decider if I'm honest.

The field emitters came about after thinking about well-known sci-fi shield generators (Star trek  and stuff like that) and how the tech had to have started somewhere in a comparatively lower tech form.

Power is still the issue. Its ok on a starship because you have enormous energy production but here in this alternative 1940’s most tech is just as it really was so hugel diesel engine(s) generators and accumulators. The latter holds sufficient power to hold the vehicle for a short period after engine stop and also for the side emitters (shields). The shields would stop most contemporary shells or at least significantly reduce their damage potential. However, each repelled shot would deplete the energy storage and charge time would be a factor in this tank surviving attack.

So what happens when the crew park up and decide to go a for a beer and curry - leave the engine running ?
Naw, built in hydraulic jacks each of which has a compressed air cylinder backup system in case the hydraulics are screwed. You can't see them in this image but I did model them in ..... honest!

Modelled and rendered in modo.

If you are trundling  along in your old Sherman feeling like Brad Pitt, keep an eye on the tree line coz there is a killer in the woods.................by the way, don't put your foot under the lifting generators or it will look like that tree stump

Seeing this I can imagine some commandos with chains wrapped around the bases of trees, then tossing the loose ends to their comrades on the other side and wrapping that end around the tree.  May slow the beast up a bit, but give them  time to slap sticky bombs underneath.

Good tactic.
To be honest I don't go much on this one any more. looks pretty good but also looks totally impractical.
The Jag MK2 is better (and has decent bottom armour) ....... ok, made last bit up to counteract your commando anti grav tank tectics.

Maybe had gone with the Panzer IV instead?  Revolving turret.

Naw it was the out rigged lift units sticking out of each corner that I don't like anymore.
No need for a turret as such with a highly manouverable superstucture.

Just wondering how fast it could turn around in such a crowded space?

Not given that much thought to it to be honest but I imagine there would be a drift factor during any manouvere owing to the weight.

Simliar to the sink you get with a diving aeroplane pulling up

Assuming the lift generators impose some down-force (your squashed foot comment) then there would be a constant 50 ton-displacing downforce that would have the effect of disturbing a lot of the fauna, pushing up dust and massively disturbing the airflow beneath the generators. IF they were gravity nullifers then the clean and undisturbed image might be more accurate but given the description of the technology then the image needs to be a lot more messy, clouds of dust &c.

I am not sure if a hunting Panther would want messy lift generators that give away its position so readily. Probably best with tracks.

Just thinking it through...

I missed this comment - sorry.
You make a fair point and there is a lot to sort out on this tech especially with the aircraft . However, is it not fair to say that if this was a tracked vehicle then just as much crap is being thrown up ?
I'll be honest with you, I don't go a lot on this anymore as a concept. I prefer the later tank I did and the artwork on this is lacking in exactly how you describe only that its stationary and waiting to clobber some poor bugger.

I made that comment a while back. Not being critical at all. I think I was just exploring the back story. I like to think it through. I do strongly emphasise that you need to get on with inventing some of these technologies. Drawing them is all well and good, now we need the real thing. I think a time machine will be required too so you'd better get cracking.

PS. I'm re-doing the Panzer temperature gauge faces now, new fahrenheit gauge 50% complete, then a new centigrade face on its way reading to minus 30 and plus 50. Gauge placement has some new options, place by percentage according to aspect ratio, landscape or portrait - that now works. Testing on my Win10 box shortly to see how it places in normal mode.

Ignore me I have a raging infection top right molar, antibiotics making me feel lousy and not really switched on.
You are certainly right about getting the tech down right.

No, not good. No dentist available? Get it done as it will turn into something worse if you don't. If you need a good dentist recommendation then I have the very best for you and it would make you visit Norfolk.

The infection has to be brought under control before anything else can be done - like an Abscess.

It's literally "armor hunting spider" (or "anti-tank spider" which is what I was going for). You probably got spiders because "Jagdspinne" is the German term for fishing spiders.

Small-Brown-Dog In reply to Currahee2 [2017-04-03 10:26:55 +0000 UTC]

The idea came from an interest in aerial battleships- the whole concept has always fascinated me and I got to thinking about the tech involved – Tesla,  Electrogravitics theories and stuff like that. It seemed to me that the main era was Edwardian so I got to further thinking about how this tech might develop through the 20’s 30’s and 40’s. I assumed that it would get more powerful, smaller and sophisticated so that lightweight aircraft could make use of it and heavy ground vehicles like tanks.

This is still the era of the internal combustion engine but its used for power generation coupled to high output generators which are further boosted to extremely high levels by the Tesla tech. By the 40’t there is sufficient power and know how to develop the first rudimentary shields.

That’s the thinking behind this and much of my recent stuff.

Rob-Cavanna In reply to Small-Brown-Dog [2016-05-30 16:41:21 +0000 UTC]

True! I think using a modified jagdpanther chassis as the basis for an alt-hist hover tank was an excellent choice. Such a kickass machine to begin with. And the casemate construction is perfect for hover conversion, because who needs a turret when you can just float-traverse the whole thing?

Love the fact that you set up the field emitters in a quadruped sort of format. Would be nice and stable + keeps those pesky organic churning fields well away from the crew.

Works tactically as well. Wanna act like a proper tank destroyer and set up an ambush? Just reduce power and lay "belly down" with the hull directly on the ground -giving an even lower profile than a tracked TD. Similar philosophy applies to this thing: rob-cavanna.deviantart.com/art…

I feel you on the power supply issue. Which is why we went with a realistically obtrusive generator on this Tesla SPG hexapod based on the M-7 Priest chassis: rob-cavanna.deviantart.com/art…

Just a bit, yeah. Silly amounts of research too. All the ins and outs of WWII mech warfare. This Killer in the woods gets a big fat stamp of approval.

Hmm.. you know, since those emitters are so dangerous, you have to bet they'd be weaponized in some way too. Love the idea that they have some shield capability as well. Dig how you've balanced out that advantage against energy consumption. A little give and take always makes the fantastical more realistic. Like the cost of a high powered spell.
