I had the same problem with photos too. I just turned the flash off, but without good light it still doesn't help. I just take my pictures in daylight, morning, not afternoon (which is quite difficult, when you finish your works late, but life is brutal)
Find a place where you have nice light. Close to the windows. Bright room. I usually take photos in my living room, just because it's bright
in gimp there is also automatic colour balance option, you can find it in colour options, it really works, and you can also check other colour setting options - especially contrast one, it gives very vivid colours.

omnomnom so cute! well, why don't you put the pics in photoshop or gimp, and tinker with the saturation and levels and junk? and like the other comment said, i like using daylight over flash to take pictures.
