The Future of Amazonian Fertility Pt.4
Caroline felt the huge hand of Zsófia wrap around her own and, before she knew it, the much taller woman was leading her out of the laboratory and down the hall. The Little Geneticist found herself having to speed walk just to keep up with her huge friend. Suddenly, they both came to an abrupt stop, Caroline found herself looking past the Amazon's legs to see the elevator's doors. Roughly a foot above her head, she heard Zsófia swipe her card and type a code into the security panel which granted them both entry into the elevator.
As the doors closed, sealing them both into the glorified box, Caroline found herself looking up at the woman who was still holding her hand. Zsófia had punched in the code and swiped the card with her left hand, never letting her go. In the back of her mind, Caroline worried that this woman was getting a bit too attached to her, but the fact that she was taking her up to her room, and not to some nursery, helped mitigate her fears. It would've been nice if they had given Caroline her own card.
'Shit, Dr. Devereux didn't give me my card.
"Umm, Zsófia?" The auburn haired little asked, tugging slightly at the giant woman's hand.
"Yes, Caroline?" The much taller woman chirped.
"I think we should go back to the lab."
Zsófia gazed down at the little woman with a raised eyebrow. "Why would we do that? Don't you want to see your room?"
"I do, but Dr. Devereux didn't give me a card for the elevator or my room." Caroline answered.
Zsófia couldn't contain her laughter which caused Caroline to scowl slightly.
"I didn't mean to laugh, but I've been assigned to help you out with those things." Zsófia explained.
"But I don't want to bother you with all of that."
"Nonsense. I wouldn't want you getting hurt by standing on your tiptoes or using a stepping stool or something silly like that. After all, I'm more than happy to take you to the elevator and accompany you to any place you have to go." The Amazon smiled.
It was the same smile she had given her when Caroline had awoken on the shuttle bus.
"Thanks, I guess." Caroline forced herself to smile back at the woman who would be accompanying her whenever she needed to go from now on.
"Think nothing of it. Until you've finished your research, think of me as your bodyguard." The giantess winked down at the Little Geneticist.
'Bodyguard, huh? It sounds more like she's going to be my babysitter.'
With a ding, the doors to the elevator opened and they were practically off to the races. Caroline had to kick it into high gear just to keep up with Zsófia who seemed excited. The hallway wasn't much longer than the one that led to the lab, but Caroline was almost out of breath by the time she found herself standing with her "bodyguard" in front of a huge door.
Once more Caroline heard the swipe of a key card followed by the taping of fingers against a digital screen while her hand remained firmly in the much taller woman's grip.
"Here we are! Your new home for the next few months!" Zsófia announced as they both walked over the threshold.
For the first time since they had embarked on their journey through the facility, Caroline felt Zsófia relinquish her hand, allowing her to walk into the massive room on her own. It was a rather impressive room when you considered that it was meant for a scientist working for a foreign government.
There were wooden floors beneath her feet, but Caroline wasn't entirely sure what kind of wood she was walking on. She had only ever known carpet and tile. The open layout led into the living room with a kitchen off to her left. As she ventured deeper into the huge space, she could see that the couches were made out of black leather.
"Power on."
The humongous flat screen TV that dominated the wall suddenly came to life at that moment, causing Caroline to crane her head up to see what was going on. It was perfectly positioned on the wall for an Amazon to enjoy, but Caroline could see that she would be able to watch it comfortably enough from the couch.
"What do you think, Caroline? It's voice activated. Just tell it what you want to watch and it'll find it."
"I like that." Caroline grinned.
The thought of not having to change the channel without a remote made her feel more at ease. She didn't have to worry about accidently putting it on some show meant to destroy the minds of those poor souls trapped in diapers. Speaking of which, it looked like the TV was on a news channel showing the daily news and not some show meant for toddlers which was definitely a plus in her book.
"I'm a bit jealous." Zsófia chuckled. "We soldiers don't exactly get to enjoy this level of luxury."
Caroline turned away from the massive screen and looked over at Zsófia. "I keep forgetting that you're a soldier. Is it a ceremonial thing or have you seen combat?"
"I've seen combat in regional conflicts, but Pannonia only goes in to assist our allies and I rarely get called into battle. The last few years have been peaceful save for the invasion of Ruthenia by our allies. We got the southern province for our assistance and they got to keep the Littles." Zsófia explained, her eyes looked sad as she finished speaking.
"What do you mean when you say "keep the Littles?" I was under the impression that your nation was trying to abolish the practice of "adopting" Littles?" Caroline tried not to get too emotionally heated.
"I shouldn't have said it like that. What I meant to say-"
A cheerful, electronic jingle came from Zsófia's coat.
"I have to answer this. Just a minute." The giantess turned away from Caroline and started walking towards the kitchen.
Caroline couldn't make out who Zsófia was talking to, but it seemed rather serious.
"I had no idea she-"
"She was doing what?"
You found that in her-"
"Yes, I understand. I'll bring her down to see you immediately." Zsófia hung up the phone and slid it back into her pocket as she walked over to face the smaller woman.
"That was Dr. Devereux. She wants to talk to you about your research and has requested your presence."
"I see." Caroline replied.
'She's probably really impressed with what I've already accomplished in just an afternoon's worth of time. I can't wait to see what she has to sa-'
Zsófia tugging on her arm, forcing her to come along interrupted Caroline's thoughts. She was already being dragged out the door by the time she realized just what was happening. It took a bit of effort but the Little Geneticist did her best to start jogging so she looked more like an adult and less like an unruly toddler being dragged by her babysitter. The last thing she needed was one of her new colleagues seeing her being pulled around like a brat.
Finally, they were at the elevator door again and Caroline was afforded a moment to catch her breath. The card was swiped, the code was entered and just like before; Zsófia did it all without letting go of her hand.
'She must be ambidextrous.' Caroline realized as she was ushered into the elevator.
Awkward silence filled the ten by ten cabin as it descended. For some reason, the normally restrained giantess seemed tense to Caroline. With nothing better to do, she looked up at the digital screen and noticed that they were going past the floor that the laboratory was on.
"I don't want to sound rude, but I think we missed the floor that the lab is on."
"We're not going to the research lab." A quiet voice answered. "The facility has a few subterranean areas and Dr. Devereux is currently waiting for you down here."
Caroline wanted to ask Zsófia why Dr. Devereux was meeting her in a different part of the facility, but she barely had time to watch the doors slide open when Zsófia pulled her out of the elevator and into a long corridor. Caroline could barely keep up, but hustled alongside the giantess. Her breathing was getting heavy and it felt like the hallway would never end.
"Can we please slow down?" Caroline heard herself shout.
Zsófia's brisk pace suddenly came to a halt.
"I apologize, Caroline. I didn't realize that I was walking so fast." The giantess looked down at her. "It's just that this part of the facility makes me feel so uneasy. I don't want to be down here any longer than is necessary."
"Why does this place make you feel uneasy? What do they do down here?"
"They do unnatural things down here; Terrible things." Zsófia instantly covered her mouth for a brief moment before lowering her voice, "I shouldn't have said anything. It's classified information and Dr. Devereux didn't exactly tell me why we're meeting her down here."
"But I'm here researching the same genetic abnormalities as she is! It shouldn't be kept a secret from me!"
"Shhh! Don't shout!" Zsófia crouched down in front of Caroline and looked her directly in the eyes. "Look, I can only say that your idea of a cure, and Dr. Devereux's cure, yield two completely different results. I just hope that you can solve the problem so Dr. Devereux's solution doesn't become the only one." Zsófia replied in a hushed voice.
Caroline frowned and allowed Zsófia to resume leading her through the labyrinth-like series of hallways. The further they went into the building, the more anxious Caroline became as she thought about what Zsófia had said. The stillness and unknown purpose of this part of the facility seemed so eerie that it bothered Caroline to her core. It didn't help that they both were walking past doors every twenty feet that lined each side of the hallway with clipboards hanging from the windows. It felt more like a prison, or even a hospital, than a research facility.
Her thoughts were running wild by the time they reached their destination; a pair of large doors which had no windows.
"We're here." Caroline heard Zsófia announce into a little box on the wall next to the doors.
"Bring her in." A voice replied in a neutral tone.
A hiss of air could be heard as the doors opened. Caroline gazed into the huge room and realized that it looked like it belonged in some kind of hospital. Standing alone in the middle of the enormous space was Dr. Devereux.
"Thank you for bringing her down here, lieutenant." The woman in the white lab coat smiled.
Zsófia frowned. "I don't know why you would need to talk with her down here, but I hope that it won't be very long. This place gives me the creeps."
Dr. Devereux chuckled. "After all this time you're still bothered by what we do down here?"
"I don't think it has any medical value, but I suppose that's up to the government to decide." Zsófia shot back, her hand never leaving Caroline's.
"Oh, but you're wrong. The government's main goal is to increase the population, but they have sanctioned my operations here since my research has shown that I can create Amazons out of some of our younger test subjects." Dr. Devereux grinned, her lab coat adding to her aura, making her seem like a mad scientist.
Caroline felt her annoyance vanish when she heard what Dr. Devereux said. 'She's talking about creating Amazons from the test subjects!' It was so weird, they were talking about these things like she wasn't even in the room.
"I see. I suppose that explains the last batch of volunteers, but who am I to judge what the government does?" Zsófia replied with a sigh.
"Yes, a few preschools will be missing their little students for a few years, but what they will get in return will aid your nation in ways never before seen!" The scientist proclaimed.
"Just what exactly are you doing down here?!" Caroline demanded.
"Well, I was wondering when you would ask that question, Caroline." The giantess lowered her eyes to meet the smaller woman. "I will be happy to answer your questions in time, but there's an important matter that we must discuss first."
Dr. Devereux turned her gaze back to Zsófia. "You're dismissed."
Caroline felt Zsófia squeeze her hand tighter than she had ever felt her squeeze it before. Any harder and it might've broken a bone or two.
"I'm not leaving without Caroline." Zsófia stated in a firm tone.
"Lieutenant, I have business to discuss with Dr. Miller; classified business that's above your pay grade. I'll call for you when we're done down here." Dr. Devereux explained before adding, "you may leave now."
Caroline felt Zsófia release her hand from her iron grip. She looked up at the Zsófia's face before the giant turned to leave. It might've been her mind, but Caroline could've sworn that there was sadness in those eyes.
Dr. Devereux waited for the doors to close before she spoke. "I must admit that I'm very impressed with the progress you've made in a single day. It's truly phenomenal."
"What can I say? Your computers are amazing! The processing power is really what helped me get so much done. I was able to do what would've normally taken me months to accomplish in my lab in just a single afternoon here. I think I ran something like twenty genome sequences an hour and then I cross checked the Amazon samples. Once I singled it down to native Pannonians, it all just fell into place. It was almost like I was playing connect the dots." Caroline boasted, a smile spreading slowly on her face as she noticed the look of surprise growing on her colleague's face.
"But how is that possible?! I have an entire team under me who has been working on this for almost six months!" The giantess exclaimed.
"I've dedicated my whole life to trying to help your kind have children and it is that dedication which has given me a rather unique perspective. I have studied the different regions of the world and have a unique perspective of how different Amazons operate on a genetic level. I want to see a world where all Amazons can have children; their own, biological children. If I had the proper tools, I dare say that I probably could have achieved that goal by now." Caroline explained, feeling oddly empowered.
"My team has spent months trying to do what you have done in just a single day." Dr. Devereux repeated in a neutral tone, trying not to show any hit of emotion.
"If it's any consolation to you, I'm happy to report that with my findings alone we can raise the Fertility rate up from twenty percent to at least thirty five percent."
"I see." The giantess paused and walked over to where the little woman was standing. "I suppose this calls for a celebratory drink."
Caroline was surprised to see that the doctor was reaching down to hand her a glass of red liquid.
"I hope you don't mind drinking it out of a shot glass. It's the only thing that we have that you can drink out of." Dr. Devereux explained.
"I don't mind. At least it's not a sippy cup."
Both women laughed at Caroline's joke.
"I still can't get over just how much you've accomplished in just a day. I should've been overseeing the research team instead of letting that old fool, Barbas, direct everyone."
"He's not an old fool! He was trained to spot documented defects, not uncover unknown ones." Caroline stated defensively. "I personally believe that Dr. Barbas could've done what I've been doing if his professors didn't discourage him from seeking out the mysteries that exist in your genetic code when he was a young man."
"I see, but he wasn't my choice. The Pannonia Government assigned him to my team." The taller woman replied, taking a sip from her own glass of wine.
"Well, the Pannonians were smart enough to get him on board and to allow me to join you all." Caroline replied, eyeing her drink before taking a sip. She rarely drank alcohol.
"We can sit here and talk about Dr. Barbas all night if you want, but that's not why I called you here."
"Why did you want to see me?" Caroline asked, lowering the glass from her lips.
"I hate to mention this, but when my associates were checking your belongings for contraband they came across something very distressing. Som-"
"You went through my luggage?! How dare you violate my privacy like that!" Caroline shouted.
"Your privacy being violated should be the least of your worries, young lady. I'm not going to allow someone like you to use my facility to-"
"Call me crazy, but it sounds like you're threatened by me. Threatened that I can do what you haven't been able to do." Caroline declared boldly, interrupting the giantess.
Matilda eyed the Little bitterly.
The Little Geneticist paused to take a sip from her glass. "How would the Pannonian Government react to the news that a Little cracked the genetic code and solved the Fertility Crisis?" Caroline wondered aloud, feeling oddly empowered as she held her glass of wine.
Dr. Devereux tried not to scowl, but the little bitch was starting to get on her nerves. It was bad enough that this child had basically done what her team had tried to do during the course of the last few months in a single day, but the way this tiny woman acted was truly irritating her. She had no idea how much work she had done while Barbas made little progress above. However, the giantess was able to keep her cool because she had this cocky little brat right where she wanted her.
"Yeah, Doctor Caroline Miller cures Amazonian infertility and gets a statue in every capital in the world!" Caroline proclaimed, her arrogance fueled by her growing alcoholic buzz.
Matilda Devereux ignored the Little in front of her.
"I couldn't believe what my assistant told me so I personally read your diary, as well as your notes with a magnifying glass, and I've come to the conclusion that you're simply too smart for your own good." The giantess stated as she walked closer to Caroline. "Wanting to help us cure our infertility is very noble of you and why you were granted such benefits and protection when you landed in Pannonia. However, if my superiors knew of your ulterior motive; your plan to alter the genome of Littles thus creating a generation of Littles that can grow as tall as us… They would wipe your mind clean and throw you into some orphanage."
'Shit. They know about my research!'
Caroline instantly started to feel a bit queasy, but she also knew that she was far too valuable to simply be discarded like any other Little. She was the key to solving their biggest problem!
"Is that a threat? Because I'm no use to you guys if I'm sitting in a playpen, waiting to be adopted in some opraphange." Caroline calmly replied.
"That's true, but you're also a liability and if I were to tell my superiors about your true motive for assisting us, you'd be lucky to even know the difference between a playpen and a crib after they get through with you."
"But I have done nothing wrong!" Caroline whined.
"But you have. Even if you do increase our chances of conceiving a child. Even if it's an absolute guarantee that all Amazon's can have their own biological baby, you fail to realize that there will always be women who want to adopt a Little and-"
"But that is why I'm doing this! I only want to help my people and end our infantile imprisonment to your kind! What's wrong with that?!" Caroline demanded.
"Like I was trying to explain before you interrupted me… Entire nations depend on Littles. Millions of people across the world work in industries manufacturing furniture, clothing, food and diapers for your kind. Thousands more work as doctors, teachers and daycare workers for you tiny tots. If you actually manage to crack your own genome and grow a generation of giant Littles, the world would literally descend into a global depression which would ultimately lead to chaos and war."
"But that is crazy! Those industries could be retrofitted to produce furniture and clothing for a new generation of people! Those teachers and doctors would still be able to do their jobs and even the daycare workers would still have jobs because they would be watching over a new baby boom!" Caroline stood there with stars in her eyes. "Imagine it; a world where my people and yours could procreate together and not live in fear. There would never be another short progeny for them to worry about. Imagine a world where we all live under the same rules, equal and free to pursue the future in any way we see fit! The death of Littles wouldn't doom the world. It would usher in a new era of prosperity for all of us!"
"I'm sorry, Caroline, but such thinking is counter productive and dangerous to our society." Matilda replied as she brought a little remote control out of her lab coat pocket.
"What's th-" Caroline felt her whole body go numb as Dr. Devereux pressed a button on the remote.
In the blink of an eye, Caroline was on the ground. She could barely keep her eyes open for a few moments, just long enough to see Dr. Devereux's heels clacking on the cold tile as the giant walked towards her. The sounds were echoing around in her head and just as the giantess picked her up from the ground everything went black.
