Well, in my twisted mind, Haddock, who is a confused and lonely old man, liiikes Tintin, who IS fluffy (my word for gay. It stems from fluffy maribou boas used by drag queens.) and they have a lot of almost smoochy moments, but Tintin falls for the dashing Basque gypsy Clopin (from a story I wrote, "Tintin in Basqueland"{Basqueland is an area of Spain. I thought it odd that Tintin went everywhere, but never right nextdoor. }), who he meets at a medieval fair. Clopin is one of them there fire-eaters, and Tintin sees the shirtless, sweaty bronze guy spitting fire on the counter of a local tavern and gets all hot and bothered. It's a very fun story. Lots of sexyness, as well as an explanation(ish) of Tintin's roots (parents, why he's alone, etc.).
Long story short, I think herge never put Tintin in romantic situations because he's supposed to be gay and seeing as how that topic was taboo, he just left things alone. But, he kicked the bucket so the world will never know. XI

Geehee. Here's a snippet from Tintin and Clopin's first kiss together (and Tintin's first, period) in the Santa Miliardo cathedral.
To set the scene - Tintin was left on the steps of this cathedral as a baby by his parents, who were fugitive because his mother was a beautiful gypsy who pissed off a policeman in Spain by not accepting his advances. His father was a mild-mannered shoemaker from Brussels, but the cathedral was in Spain, where they lived a while. Anyhoo, he was raised in the cathedral by the Sisters of Santa Milliardo, and as a boy, he sang in the choir. Now, he has returned to the cathedral to seek guidance, for he has felt feeling of liust for another man and is fearful of the afterlife, blah blah. Clopin saw him run away and followed him here, to talk things out. NOW THEN...
Tintin approached the elegant painting on the wall of a beautiful pair of cherubs, feeling the paintstrokes and crackles with trembling fingers and his pensive blue eyes welled with tears.
"Pater noster..." he began to sing to himself a hymn he sang as a child to lift his spirits. "Qui es en coelis..."
Clopin, still slicked in sweat from his performance, entered the cavernous chamber and took in the echo of his fugitive's positively angelic voice. They were all alone, the candles' dim light and many ancient paintings their only audience.
"El est un sotto voce, mon petit chou." he whispered darkly, approaching Tintin and standing behind him, resting one hand on Tintin's. His careless black bangs hung obstructively before his fiery jade eyes and he gave a cunning smile. "It is a treasure."
"What?" Tintin sniffled shyly. His face was on fire, his knees weak. The man tempting him with flaming breath and chiseled muscle was now holding his hand! His throat went dry and he gulped, staring intently ahead to the painting a foot before his button nose. "What did you call me...?"
"I said... yours is a lovely voice, my little cabbage. You have the voice of the angels. And..." he smiled even more darkly, "a body to match..."
"I'm s-sorry!" he yanked his hand away and ran down the aisle to the altar, then felll to his knees, wrapped his rosary around his hands, and began to beg for mercy in choked sobs.
"Our Father, who art-"
Clopin chased him and grasped his arms, pulling him up to his feet, their hearts pounding against eachother.
"Why are you so afraid of me?!" The gypsy suitor demanded with a shake.
"G-..." Tintin winced, his eyes clenched shut. One look at those lips and he would have weakened even more.
"WHAT?!"
"G-GOD COULD NEVER FORGIVE ME!" Tintin finally screamed and allowed his tears to fall at last. Clopin would hear no more.
"We're all sinners here! DAMN YOU AND YOUR EXCUSES!" With this, he threw his arms around Tintin's back and jammed their mouths together. His desires would not be denied another moment, and his tongue dueled hungrily with Tintin's.
The boy trembled. He was surely going to Hell. Not only for letting this happen... for feeling another man's tongue against his own... but for enjoying it.
