This helps a LOT! Thankyou. Also, I always used white for highlighting hehe.

What brush did you use for the actual rendering?
π: 0 β©: 1
Smirtouille In reply to AClockworkKitten [2014-06-15 04:38:35 +0000 UTC]
The hard one. Make sure it has opacity set on pen pressure though, otherwise it sucks. ^^

Cool informative tutorial, easy to understand and illustrational, but I must say I think your first drawings are much more lively and interesting than your painting of them.

Thank you. I did get stuck in a kinda clean, "safe" and boring rendering technique at that point. I have just started to break away from it this year, going back to my older ways of rendering that were more organic and intuitive but not nearly as safe.

On the other hand, I can imagine that doing that and mastering it the "boring and strict way" pays off in the long run, or? Nice work by the way. I'm not doing anything wholely digital, but I use wacom , photoshop and sketch book pro inbetween stages to relieve my paintings from being messed with, so I am a little familiar with some of the challenges with doing it digital. I fnd that improves my physical work too .

Yeah, rendering is basically to make things look 3D in the context of painting. Glad my tutorial could help you out!

i'd see examples of rendering, but the person who did it wouldn't really explain or they did it so complexly!
thanks for the llama, by the way!

ohhh, NICE!, may I ask, why do you insist on not using black or white?
π: 0 β©: 1
Smirtouille In reply to PemaMendez [2012-09-06 00:18:57 +0000 UTC]
Thank you!
Less black/white values makes your image richer and more realistic, as pure black and pure white are rarely seen for real. If you look at a face it's very rare that you will find actual pure black in it except for the pupil, and it's not even necessary to always show the pupil to paint a convincing-looking face. : )

I see, very true, but what about the paintings that have that creepy atmosphere with high saturation (example [link] )? is it okay to use black there or I should still just pick a really really dark tone of the color?

Smirtouille In reply to PemaMendez [2012-09-06 03:42:00 +0000 UTC]
There is nothing that you "should" do or not do. Standards depend on whatever you wish to achieve. Avoiding black helps toward naturalistic/realistic effect but the effect is not an end in itself.

Hello! Thank you very much for these tips. This will definitely be something that I'll reference back to often.
Also, I apologize in advance for any weird notifications. The drag and drop feature screwed me over.
