Description EDIT: Sorry for the typos :C the tut's big so I missed some, will fix them sometime.

Download for full view.

A tutorial meant for artists who are new to publishing their works online. I've seen many uncropped, unedited sketches and pictures, and I think it's a pity. Some of my friends, who like to draw from time to time but not too often, tend to do that, and I just can't comprehend why they don't try to improve the quality of the photo/scan. So I decided to make this and show that it doesn't take much effort I illustrated it with the programmes I use but there are also others, even the simplest picture browsers usually have some adjustment tools.

I've never made a tutorial before but I hope it's at least a bit useful! Don't hesitate to share it with someone who's reluctant to edit their art after scanning

Maybe you know better strategies, after all I'm no expert, but this is not meant for experts either. Feel free to share your ideas

I mentioned the groups because many of them don't like the scanner borders, dark mobile phone photos of pictures etc. With the adjustments I proposed you are much more certain to avoid your art being declined in most groups on dA

The picture I used was drawn by me.

Przeprzydatny tutorial! Zawsze miałam problemy ze swoimi skanami, bo nie umiałam poprawnie zedytować je potem. Teraz już wiem. Dzięki :'D

Awesome! I never like the quality of the image scanned compared to how it looks in person

I know, scanners are such colour stealers : / but what would we do without them :3

Ohh.. nice tut!! this what I need.

But I was wondering about something.
I also doodle in my notebook and shading it, can we clean those notebook lines without erase the shading??
It kinda waste to throw it.

Notebook lines? If you mean squared (or lined) paper www.rapidonline.com/cataloguei… , then if it's blue you can erase it on comp. You have to go to channels and copy the blue channel to layers. If you do have blue (or any other colour) lines and want to know more I can post a screenshot

If the lines are black I'm afraid you can only use eraser on comp to clean at least some of them. Or try to play with contrast so the stronger lines are better visible. I started buying notebooks with blank pages for uni to draw in them without such risks

Its lined paper. Yeah its blue. I not clear with word instruction. Any visual guidance is appreciated ^^Β

This should work with lined paper with blue lines as well.

Going to admit I cringe whenever I see a spiral bound edge left in a scanned picure .

Smodyl In reply to JSmallDragon [2013-01-07 11:20:13 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes it can look good if we're going for a sketchbook page look. But not when it's all blurry and darkens the picture D:

Thank you for this tutorial! I uploaded a picture last week and had a really hard time before, because it was all greyish and low saturated. I just didn't know how to work with it, to show the colours like I saw them on paper. This will help me a lot the next time.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Smodyl In reply to JustSchramme [2013-01-06 08:31:02 +0000 UTC]

I forgot to mention a useful trick - often if there is just a part greyiness (in the case of photos) I don't clean it out, I treat it as a natural gradient and add some textures to make it look cool XD

Glad it helps, you're welcome!
