I did a quick little doodle of my childhood pet fish, Rainbow. I was thinking about him this evening since my mom is using his old tank for a new betta who she’ll be putting in her classroom (hopefully out of reach of all the kids!), so I decided to spend the last couple hours drawing him. I don’t think I have any photos of him, so this is all done from memory, and I’ve come to realize that fish are harder to draw than I gave them credit for. I mean… at least I remembered the lateral line?

The thing about Rainbow is that he was super tough. He lived for a very long time - I had him for two or three years, which is a long life for a betta fish - and survived various hardships including sickness, dirty water, and a period of about four days spent contained in a styrofoam Sonic cup while we moved across the country, and I was very attached to him as a result. I believe I was in sixth grade when he finally died, and my family had a whole funeral for him and buried him in the creek that ran through our backyard. Years later, my mom confessed that she spent the whole affair trying not to laugh…

Anyway, here’s a quick Rainbow doodle for the soul. Enjoy!
