Utena and Anthy were actually not romantically involved. Utena even states several times that she's not into girls, and its only boys she falls in love with throughout the entire anime and manga (Dios, Touga, and Akio). She eve says at the end of the series that she does love Anthy, but not THAT way. They share a very deep loving bond, but it's NOT a romantic one (and I actually think that makes it more special rather than just chalking it up to another yuri couple). Even Anthy has only showed sexual interest in one person (her brother Akio, gross). But due to this bond they share, a lot of fans WANTED them to be a couple. That's where the movie comes from. It was a retelling of the series and total fan-service where Utena and Anthy WERE sexually involved (the movie was actually very bad though, shame). But even though Utena and Anthy were not a couple in the series or manga, there were several other same sex/bi couples. including one of my favorites (Juri and Shiori).ο»Ώ
