Even I was trained as an oil painter, I hated working in water for so many years but my style and preferences changed over time. The first tip I can give is that work on a good paper, the frustration comes when you put water on it and suddenly it becomes uncontrollable. Work layer by layer, wash by wash. There are a few basic techniques like dry layers, wash-by-wash, wet-on-dry, wet-on-wet, dripping and so on. If you have done oils or acrylics, it's the opposite workflow in waters. You have to be steady and light both in color and with water. The tricky part is that it is least dense medium to work with, hence making the artist go nuts when trying to make it. And Yes never go for details at first, you can perhaps do that with pencils or others but never water.
