wonderful work! I really like your macro photography! I think it's really the detail in the eyes that gets me haha

I had a question though; I have a Canon Rebel T3i, and I was wondering if my camera is able to take that kind of photo (macro I mean). Is it the camera or the lens that allows you to take macro shots? I'm still trying to learn everything that my camera can do, so anything that you can tell me about it would be greatly appreciated

Hi Zach

Your camera is capable of taking photos like this. There are a lot of variables but the lens and lighting are the most critical as far as I am able to determine.
You do not necessarily require a macro lens, however, Canon makes a 60mm EF-S lens that is affordable and quite marvellous, married with a set of
extension tubes it becomes what is known as the poor man's MP-E (I use an actual MP-E 65mm 1-5x macro). Here is what it is possible to do with a
poor man's MP-E: dalantech.deviantart.com/art/W… , ...and this: dalantech.deviantart.com/art/B…
...and this: dalantech.deviantart.com/art/H… , ...and this: dalantech.deviantart.com/art/B…

You get the picture.
From the lighting side of things there are an infinite number of solutions, and amazingly no right one!
The only thing you have to do is decide what kind of look you would like to achieve. Then it's a matter of what you can afford and what you can improvise to get that result.
As an example, ... at one time I was acutely aware that having two sources of light helps create a more 3D look. I only had the one 550EX flash but I happened upon an ad for the
Rogue Flashbender, the set up looked ludicrous but there was a perceptible improvement in my images. snomanda.deviantart.com/art/Ma…
But lets face facts there are guys out there who do stuff like this: orionmystery.deviantart.com/ar… with just the one diffused flash head.

Essential reading for the macro flash enthusiast:

Macro rig and set up threads ...bare in mind that these threads have been running a long time, you might want to start in the middle or at the end but there are a lot of ideas and
creative solutions on how to get your light as close to your subject as possible (which it the ultimate goal).:

Good luck.

Wow! That's a lot of information! Thank you so so much for taking the time to write all this for me!

I really appreciate it, and will definitely go take the time to read through all of the links you sent me, and eventually go hunting for better photos

Thanks so much again!

You' re welcome. I'm wondering.. do you use a tripod when using this lens or do you use it handheld?

I chased this character around for quarter of an hour yesterday, in sunlight and a howling wind.
I always shoot handheld, I have never tried shooting insects with a tripod and don't imagine I ever will.

I see, thank you! so it's not a problem to use it handheld with the external flash.Β
