This Miner Bee is a very small one... not even 10mm.
At 1:1 he would fill less than half the frame of the
1.6 crop sensor of my Canon 550D.

This image is about 1.7:1. A large wasp or bumble bee
might appear about this size at 1:1.

Indeed. I use a set of Kenko extension tubes.
I have the full 68mm set on the camera all the time.
It means I am always prepared for a greater than 1:1
macro shot but little else.
