Description

That day I agreed to become Valcore’s apprentice. I yanked my satual off a tree branch left a note for Moonshadow and walked into the alley where I met Valcore and he walked me to his home where I would train. He led me into a “training hollow” as he called it and locked me in. This was upsetting of course but I trusted him. What sparked my interest was that there was nothing in the room, nothing. I was a little frightened when I heard blades meeting each other. It was coming from outside the room I was locked in. I knew that my childhood had ended long ago but I never knew I would be sparring at such a young age. Valcore came into the room two well-crafted blades in hand. He threw one to me and I caught it, and dang it was heavy!

He held the sword in one hand in a loose fashion. Me (never holding any large blade in my life) held it tightly with my right hand, so tightly that my knuckles turned white. I felt my left foot take a step in front of the other. I could feel a high amount of anticipation race through my veins. This voice was ringing in my ears “Don’t do this; you’re making a big mistake. RUN!” it echoed in my mind but I ignored it, one of my first mistakes. Valcore swung his blade at me, I twisted mine so it blocked the attack.

I was finding it difficult to block his attacks. He just kept coming and coming, and each attack was stronger than the last. I would finish blocking one attack and he would hit me with ANOTHER! I jumped out of the way of his swinging blade and tried to hit him with my blade. I hit him, I watched as he almost dropped his blade, but made a quick slash through my shoulder first. I wrenched my sword free from his arm and looked at the blood running from his arm. It was black, black. I stared at his arm in fear and confusion. “You shouldn’t have seen that.” He hissed and covered the gushing wound with a hand. He left the room locking me in, alone and hidden from the night sky.

I needed to see the night sky, the stars especially. I could see the stars wherever I went. I always knew they were there looking down on me, watching over me. I felt safer knowing that the stars were out. I had to scramble onto a window sill high up but I saw them. I opened the window sill and crouched on the sill. Staring out into the black night as a cold breeze whipped back my black hair. My hair matched the night and the way I felt. I had killed a girl and hurt a grown man, would I harm everyone I met? I felt a great need to walk along roofs of buildings, why was beyond me. I ignored the need and scrambled down and into a dark corner. The lights were out and I could see perfectly, I was so weird. I treated my shoulder aware of how deep the wound was.

I saw a light through a peep hole in the door. I also heard a heated argument going on so I got up to check it out. “I have got the girl! There is not much more I can do with someone so far gone!” Valcore hissed as he paced in front of a portal showing something that resembled a giant black and purple shadow. “You can train her as I did you.” Said the shadow thing “Yes you have trained me but you don’t understand the sheer power she holds within the palm of her hand.” Valcore said pacing and throwing his hands about. “You can and you will, she is one who controls shadows and darkness. She has the greatest chance of ruining my plans.” Said the shadow mildly changing to a deeper darker black and purple. “I know! Don’t treat me like an apprentice! I will find a way to break her, without taking her life is the trouble.” Valcore said pacing and using a hand jester that really shouldn’t be used.

“YOU SHALL NOT KILL HER! Drawing blood is something else but we need her alive you moron.” Said the shadow. “I will try not to draw too much blood but if I break her I am worried of how she will change.” Valcore said stopping in his tracks and turning to the portal. “She will change, she will become stronger and more cooperative.” The shadow said calmly. Valcore’s shoulders sagged “I don’t think it will only do that, we need her as she is currently if we alter her too much, she will be worthless. Overlord I do not wish to alter her to much she could become dangerously unstable.” Valcore said worried.

“Unstable?” The “Overlord” hissed. “Yes she might try to kill herself or knowing her already run off. Or turn herself around.” Valcore shivered. “She will not, go on and do what I told you. You need to strengthen your abilities.” The Overlord said “She hit me on our first battle, is this a sign that I am getting weak?” Valcore asked. “No, now go do what I told you.” The Overlord said almost sympathetically. “Yes master.” Valcore said and walked out of my vision, and the portal disappeared before my eyes.

“I will defeat the both of you if I die trying.” I whispered and curled up in the rafters, my new favorite spot.
